Dates on My Finger is by the Iraqi writer Muhsin Al-Ramli, and this was his second article for him. It was first published in Madrid (Spain) year 2008 by Dar Taatheer Nombre. Next, it published its first Arabic edition in Beirut year 2009, by the Arab House of Sciences – Publishers[1], and other different publications in Algeria. However, this novel was longlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction year 2010.[2]

The novel revolves around the aspects of the nature and the transformation in Iraqi society over the three generations, as it took place between Iraq and Spain. In addition, it deals with many topics such as love, war, dictatorship, freedom, immigration, tradition, modernity, East, West… and many others. According to what was published by Al-Hayat newspaper, on Wednesday, 03 June 2009 about its content. (The novel talks about the memories of Iraq, (Cradle of Civilization) and events that take place in Spain. The novel is focusing and connecting a person to his/her homeland and between the life in country of emigration, especially for those who’s coming or fleeing from the painful reality of their country. However, the writer encounters scenes and images that highlight basic themes of two different lives belonging to the same person. One of them feels the longing inside him and the other lives his life willfully and forced it to adapt with daily life. (Since my escape out of Iraq 10 years ago, I forced myself to forget until I did). To combine and mix between these two lives, the narrator cuts out pictures from the newspaper of his country, as he choses the least harsh of them, he hangs and looks at them on the walls of his room. He added: (My identity is first, then my longing to embrace my mother and brothers, after that visiting Aleya’s tomb, to swimming in the Tigris River, to my friends, and to our cows, donkeys, chickens and mountains). Aleya is both his cousin and girlfriend who drowned down in the river.
