Theo Alcántara is a Spanish-born American conductor, born April 16, 1941, in Cuenca, Castile, Spain.[1][2][3] Maestro Alcántara conducts both orchestra and opera. Maestro Alcántara has held the following positions:

He has guest conducted with the Philadelphia Orchestra,[3][7] Baltimore Symphony Orchestra,[3] Columbus Symphony Orchestra,[3] Dallas Symphony Orchestra,[3] the Detroit Symphony Orchestra,[3] Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra,[3] Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra,[3] Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra,[3] San Diego Symphony,[3] Seattle Symphony,[3] Utah Symphony,[3] Vancouver Symphony Orchestra,[3] Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra,[3] the Simón Bolívar Orchestra of Caracas, Venezuela,[3] Copenhagen Radio Orchestra,[3] National Symphony of Mexico,[3] and the Municipal Orchestra of Taipei in a tour of China.[3] He has been invited to conduct at music festivals in Aspen,[3] Grant Park in Chicago,[3] Chautauqua,[3] Meadbrook,[3] Spoleto,[3] and Saratoga Springs.[3]

On May 27, 1978, he made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, conducting Don Giovanni.[1][2] Maestro Alcántara has conducted a number of the world's major opera companies, including the New York City Opera,[3] the Florida Grand Opera,[3] Washington National Opera,[3] the Mexico City Opera,[3] and the International Opera Festival in the Canary Islands.[3]

Maestro Alcántara has recorded for Naxos Records and Marco Polo records.[8]

Maestro Alcántara studied at the Real Conservatorio de Musica in Madrid,[2][3] and received diplomas in piano and composition.[1] While at the Real Conservatorioe, he toured as a concert pianist and accompanist throughout Spain, and France. He then studied at the Akademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he attended master classes with Herbert von Karajan, receiving his diploma in conducting in 1964.[1][2][3] In 1966 he won the silver medal at the Dimitri Mitropolous International Music Competition in New York.[2]
