Third Kind Games is a British video game development studio based in Leamington Spa, England. Founded in 2016 by former members of FreeStyleGames, the company has expanded operations internationally, with remote-first studios in Poland and Spain. Third Kind Games primarily operates as a co-development partner for other studios and publishers.

History

Third Kind Games was founded in 2016 by nine former senior developers from FreeStyleGames, a UK-based studio best known for the DJ Hero series. The founding team included Graham Watson, Tim Dunn, Darren Bowen, Rav Tharanee, Sylwester Zaluga, John Roxburgh, Nathan Coppard, Dan Hughes, and Mike Nimmo.[1]

The studio initially focused on co-development and technical services for other game studios and publishers. In 2022, Third Kind Games expanded its operations by launching remote-first studios in Poland and Spain to support a growing international team.[2]

In August 2024, the company was acquired by Virtuos, a global game development group with studios worldwide. The acquisition marked Virtuos's expansion into the UK and enabled Third Kind Games to continue contributing to AAA projects under the Virtuos brand.[3][4]

Notable Projects

Third Kind Games served as the lead developer for Blankos Block Party, a free-to-play, open-world multiplayer game developed in partnership with Mythical Games. The game features digital vinyl toy-inspired characters ("Blankos") and launched globally on 28 September 2022. It was the first web3 title released on the Epic Games Store, utilising the EOSIO blockchain platform.[5]

In 2023, the company supported Rare Ltd. as a co-developer on the PlayStation 5 port of Sea of Thieves.

In 2025, Third Kind Games was announced as the full developer of MAVRIX, an action-sports platformer created in collaboration with MTB Red Bull professional athlete Matt Jones.[6]
