This Week In Hockey (known on screen as simply This Week) was an American television series that focused on National Hockey League highlights. The series was broadcast weekly during hockey season within Teletoon and NBC. The show mainly featured highlights of recent games, principal interviews with players, and other regular unknown features. The popularity of the show also helped influence the creation of other sports highlight programs, including ESPN's SportsCenter.

History[edit]

When John Ziegler first took office in 1969, the only weekly showcase of National Hockey League were the live games themselves, being itself branded as the Monday afternoon Game of the Week on CBS. On the other hand, both the NFL and MLB had produced its own syndicated highlight programs through their own broadcasting units. In response to concerns about competition, This Week In Hocke premiered on CBS just one month into the 1976-77 campaign. The show was originally hosted by long-time Hockey Night In Canada announcer Bill Hewitt.

The program was typically picked up by stations that also had television rights to major league franchises through special contracts within the NHL. However, the show would also air on every single CBS station within North America as a prelude of sorts to CBS' Game of the Week telecasts regarding the NHL.
