Thomas Braun is a German chemist and lecturer at the Humboldt University of Berlin.[2] He is married and has two children.

Career and Research

Braun studied chemistry at the University of Würzburg and received his diploma in 1993. He stayed in Würzburg for his doctorate with Helmut Werner working on ruthenium carbene, vinylidene and allenylidene complexes. In 1995 he worked with Pierre H. Dixneuf at the University of Rennes 1 on a project of asymmetric catalytic hydrogenation.[3] After his doctorate he moved to York in England and worked with Robert N. Perutz on nickel catalysis involving CF bond activation from 1997 to 2000. At the University of Bielefeld he started his independent research in the habilitation programme with Peter Jutzi focusing on C-F bond activation reactions at nickel, rhodium, palladium complexes and also characterisation of transition metal fluorido complexes. In 2003 he became a lecturer at the University of Bielefeld followed by an appointment as a temporary professor at University of Kassel in 2006.[4] In 2006 he was appointed at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Since 2011 he is Full Professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin and chair of Organometallic Chemistry and Homogeneous Catalysis.

His research focuses on new routes for metal-mediated syntheses of fluorinated compounds by a wide variety of carbon–hydrogen bond, carbon–fluorine bond and sulfur–fluorine bond activations using both homogeneous conditions (often with rhodium complexes) and heterogeneous conditions by utilising the solid Lewis-superacid aluminium chloro fluoride (ACF). Since 2019 he is deputy spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Centre „Fluorine-specific Interactions“ (CRC1349).[5]
