Thomas Kingston (b. 22 June 1978) is an British financier and former hostage negotiator. Full name: Thomas Robin Henry Kingston is a member of the British Royal Family through marriage. He is married to Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin HRH Prince Michael of Kent, and great granddaughter of King George V.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Kingston was born in Evesham in Worcestershire, United Kingdom. His father is William Martin Kingston, QC, the No.1 Rated Planning Barrister before retiring in 2019.[1][2] His mother, Jill Mary Kingston née Bache, is the granddaughter of Sir William Joseph Pearman-Smith of Park Hall[3] and the daughter of Robert Philip Sydney Bache[4], Managing Director and majority shareholder of family owned company Salters est.1760.[5] Kingston was educated at co-educational boarding school, Dean Close, Cheltenham.[6] He read History at Bristol University.[7]

Career[edit]

Reportedly Kingston worked at the British Foreign Office, following that as a negotiator for the International Centre of Reconciliation in Iraq after the Second Gulf War.[8][9] He worked alongside Canon Andrew White, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s representative to the Middle East, which involved leading a project of conflict resolution and reconciliation between Sunni and Shia leaders.[10] Kingston specifically managed the project in Iraq involving extensive hostage negotiation.[11] White describes Kingston as ‘one of the most remarkable people I have ever worked with’.[12] He describes in his book that Kingston's blond hair made him very conspicuous necessitating him wearing a kafiya to avoid abduction when outside the Green Zone.[13] Together they were the first independent hostage negotiators to operate in Iraq after the 2003 invasion, working on in excess of sixty hostage cases.[14] White claims they were successful in securing the release of many hostages but does not name them specifically, he acknowledges their failure in the cases of British hostages Kenneth Bigley and Margaret Hassan.[15] In 2004 Kingston and Canon White were targeted in a suicide bombing in which 22 people were killed.[16] Kingston left this work in 2006 to work at Schroders Asset Management.[17] Companies House lists him as a director of export financing house, Devonport Capital since 2017 and listed as a person of significant control.[18] Devonport Capital reported assets in 2021 in excess of £10m and revenue of circa £3m.[19]

Personal Life[edit]

Kingston and Lady Gabriella Windsor became engaged on the Isle of Sark, British Channel Islands, in August 2018, where the Kingston family have a house.[20] The wedding was announced by Buckingham Palace on 19 September 2018.[21] The wedding took place at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle and the reception at Frogmore House in the grounds of Windsor Castle, on 18 May 2019.[22] The wedding was attended by Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Duke of Edinburgh.[23]
