Thomas Kuzhinapurath was born on April 5, 1969, to Pakalomattom Kuzhinapurath John Thomas and Annamma John at Omallur, Pathanamthitta, Kerala. The religious atmosphere of Omallur played a pivotal role in the formation of a religious mind in Kuzhinapurath in his early childhood. Rektha Kanda Swamy Temple and Manjanikkara Dayara are famous religious pilgrim places of Omallur. The parents of Kuzhinapurath are from an agricultural background. They earned their living from agricultural fields. Omallur was also famous for the agricultural fest and cattle fair called Vayal Vanibham.[2][3][4]
Kuzhinapurath had his elementary education in Govt. LPS, Cheekkanal, Omallur. His schooling at the upper primary and high school level was in Arya Bharati High School, Omallur. After completing the high school, being influenced by the life model of his paternal grand uncle Fr. John Kuzhinapurath, he joined St. Aloysius Seminary, Trivandrum at the age of 15 in 1984.[2][3]
Seminary Life[edit]
Being a teenager in the Seminary Kuzhinapurath was attracted by the life of the saintly prelate Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios. He could learn a lot and become convinced of some spiritual ideals from the Archbishop. He served as the altar boy of the Archbishop for one year. After the initial formation in the seminary he joined for Pre-Degree in Kerala University. After the Pre-Dgree Kuzhinapurath joined St. Mary's Malankara Major Seminary, Trivandrum for the 3 year philosophical training. At the final year as a requirement of the philosophical studies he prepared a comparative study on Teilhard de Chardin and Aurobindo, called Towards the Absolute. Dr. Thomas Naickamparampil, who guided the thesis qualified it as a 'painstaking endeavor'.[2][3]
The study of philosophy led Kuzhinapurath to the field of fiction. At this time he wrote and published several short stories in Malayalam. Some of them are Vetikkettu, Anveshanam, Manimuzhakkam, Kelante Artham Kandethal.[2][3]
Along with this Kuzhinapurath succeeded in taking a bachelor's degree in Philosphy from the University of Kerala.[2][3]
Then Kuzhinapurath joined St. Joseph's Pontifical Institute, Aluva for four years of theological studies. The theological formation in this institute made him familiar with the writings of Karl Rahner, Jurgen Moltmann etc. He became the student chief editor of the philosophical journal Mathavum Chinthayum. As a requirement of the theological studies he prepared a thesis on the existential christology of Karl Rahner under the guidance of Dr. George Karakunnel. During this time he worked as the co-editor of the book, ″Viriyunna Navalokam", a scriptural study of the parables of Jesus, published by S H League, Aluva. By this time Kuzhinapurath has published a series of theological articles on Karl Rahner, Jurgen Moltmann, Teilhard de Chardin etc. His articles of this period dealt with various moral, social and political issues. An article he wrote during this period at the age of 22, was later selected by the University of Kerala for the Pre-Degree syllabus in 1998.[5] At the end of theological formation Kuzhinapurath was ordained priest on December 26, 1994.[2][3]
