Thortspace is patented[1][2][3][4]collaborative 3D mind mapping software. Thortspace is the world's first collaborative 3D mind mapping software. Thortspace is freeware Collaborative 3D (mind-mapping / concept-mapping)-like software developed out of research funded by Edward Hoare (environmentalist). This contrasts with conventional collaborative editors, like Google Docs, which provide either linear (text document), or tabular (spreadsheet) document formats.

    Notable divergence from standards[edit]

Thortspace diverges from conventional concept-mapping software in a number of ways:

    • Maps are structured around the surfaces of one or more spheres which are presented to the user in 3D
    • Map-nodes (called "thorts" in the product) can be associated in groups according to proximity, as well as connected by paths
    • Paths can be made to connect thort to group, thort to thort, group to group, thort to sphere, group to sphere, sphere to sphere
    • Multiple alternative arrangements of subsets of nodes can be stored and transitioned between
    • The concept of "Journeys" allows a series of viewpoints of maps in the 3D space to be visited sequentially, so as to make something of the form of a presentation
    • The product supports a rudimentary implementation of social networking and a newsfeed that allows users to track their own and others contributions across collaborative spheres

    Features[edit]

    Some of Thortspace's notable features:[5][6]

    • Supports a consistent interface and data sharing across several current operating system platforms and devices: Linux, Windows, MacOSX, iOS and Android
    • 3D associative and linking structures based on spheres
    • Linking and association at multiple different levels of structure
    • Real-time collaboration
    • Sharing by email, social networking account, or by private link
    • 1-click Publishing to the web
    • Designed to support: experimental reflection and play, seeing things from different points of view, the creation of building blocks/chunks of thinking, being process-oriented, and support synthesis as well as analysis

    Reviews[edit]

"Thortspace may be the first idea to attempt to redefine Buzan’s mind mapping approach since its inception." ~ Daniel W. Rasmus - Market Analysis: Why Mind Mapping is a 21st Century Necessity[7]

"A potential solution exists. It comes in the form of a new 3D visual thinking software platform called Thortspace. The platform is being used already across a broad range of interest groups including, for example, business, politics, media, academia and personal wellbeing. It is used for problem solving, time-saving, knowledge capture, collaboration, education, training and more. Because of its visual nature and the flexibility in the way it can be used, the platform lends itself to cross-silo inter-group engagement." ~ Unlocking the power of visual thinking - Alliance Magazine[8]

"It is beautifully designed and intuitive 3D mind mapping through which you can create some very complex 3D mind maps." ~ 4 Best Free 3D Mind Mapping Software For Windows[9]

"Next I experimented with the three-dimensional software Thortspace and found it helpful for opening up the analytical process. This software allows for rotation and for different zooms, thereby making it possible for me to gain different perspectives on the research data, their human and nonhuman elements and their relations. I also found that putting situational mappings and SNA (as a method) to work in temporally foregrounding some relations helped in delineating functionalities and in working against representation. This can be illustrated with the example of the relationship between the idea of ‘personal learning networks’ and the sharing of content pertaining to language teaching and learning." ~ Emke, Martina (2019) EdD thesis. pp.128-132 The Open University.[10]

"Thortspace uses a compelling immersive 3D environment within which anyone can learn by discovery; It generates an interactive space rich in subject-specific content, where you can not only be inspired to explore your subject at macro and micro levels, but also have the ability to draw on researched information from the internet and add it to your own 3D space." ~ Proceedings of British Computer Society Electronic Visualisation and Arts Conference London 2018, UK [11]

"Thortspace was praised by students and staff for its intuitive interface across all six of the pilot schools. The students seemed to have a very easy time navigating the program and creating and linking content, even the students in their primary years picked up the software very easily and for some, even went ahead at times. This was true for students using iPad and Windows versions of the software." ~ Schools of Tomorrow [12]

"Using the mind-mapping software Thortspace, they covered the key issues concerning war avoidance in Iran: the nuclear issue, relations with terror groups, geopolitical ties in the Middle East, and domestic issues." ~ NCF presents on war avoidance in Iran – a breakdown of the key issues[13]

"I’ll pass on thort, don’t go for subscriptions nor sending data to someone I don’t know. At least with Amazon, Google, Dropbox, Apple or big names there is some level of peace of mind. Don’t like the look either, neither videos/website nor the clunky product itself."[14]

"We use a novel thought-processor called Thortspace. Thortspace overview: 3D thought-processor. Non-hierarchical. Ideas placed in groups on spheres. Category sets. Paths. Several presentation modes." From Team Mentoring using a novel thought processor - Doug Morrison. [15]

Professor Dasaratha Rama, Professor at the School of Accounting, Florida International University, has written a number of articles about her use of Thortspace with her university students. Professor Dasaratha says: "The fact that I can record ideas quickly and move them around influenced my choice of Thortspace. To use it regularly as a tool for capturing, reviewing, and discussing what we are learning, efficient capture and flexible re-arrangement are critical features. Of the many tools we have tried, I am finding it easiest to accomplish in Thortspace."[16][17]

Joe Kay, Founder of Team Intelligence startup Enswarm — https://enswarm.com/ says thortspace "is an application that allows a group to map out their collective thoughts in 3D".[18]

Pierre Mongin is author of numerous books on how to benefit from mind-mapping and visual thinking. [19]
