ThreatDown is an American business-to-business cybersecurity company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company originated from Malwarebytes, a well-known cybersecurity company recognized for its contributions to modern threat remediation. ThreatDown provides managed security services, such as Managed Detection and Response (MDR) and cybersecurity solutions, such as Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and Email Security, for businesses of all sizes.
History
The birth of Malwarebytes
Malwarebytes was founded in 2008 by Marcin Kleczynski, who developed the first prototype of its malware remediation software at the age of 14.[3][4][5] The idea originated from a personal experience in which Kleczynski inadvertently infected his family computer with malware. Frustrated by the limitations of existing solutions, he collaborated with online communities and eventually created a tool to address the issue, which he began distributing for free.
Malwarebytes grew rapidly, achieving millions of dollars in sales by the time Kleczynski was 18. Over the next two decades, the company evolved into a global cybersecurity provider, offering a suite of products to protect both consumers and businesses.
The launch of ThreatDown
The Malwarebytes for Business product portfolio expanded in April 2018 with the introduction of its Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution, followed by the launch of Managed Detection and Response (MDR) in October 2022. These offerings marked the company’s move toward comprehensive enterprise security services.
In November 2023, Malwarebytes introduced ThreatDown, a dedicated business unit and brand for its business-focused cybersecurity solutions. [6] Formerly known as Malwarebytes for Business, the ThreatDown mission focused on simplifying security for resource-constrained IT teams by combining advanced threat detection and remediation with ease of deployment and management.
In 2025, ThreatDown expanded its portfolio to include email security capabilities, aiming to provide broader protection against phishing and other email-based threats.
Services and Products
ThreatDown provides cybersecurity solutions designed to prevent ransomware, malware, phishing, and AI-driven attacks before they impact business operations.
- Managed Detection and Response (MDR) – ThreatDown Managed Detection and Response (MDR) provides 24/7/365 threat monitoring, investigation, and remediation by a team of security analysts. The service is designed to identify and respond to attacks that may evade automated detection, offering organizations continuous protection and expert-led incident handling to reduce risk and minimize disruption.[7]
- Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) – ThreatDown Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) is designed to protect workstations and servers through continuous monitoring and active threat response. The platform includes features such as suspicious activity detection, integrated cloud sandboxing, endpoint isolation, Ransomware Rollback, Active Response Shell, and mapping to the MITRE ATT&CK framework.[8]
- Endpoint Protection – ThreatDown Endpoint Protection is designed to prevent threats before they infiltrate systems. The solution uses a multi-layered approach to block signature-based, fileless, and zero-day attacks. It incorporates next-generation antivirus technology alongside additional protective layers to safeguard endpoints against a wide range of cyber threats.
- Email Security – ThreatDown Email Security uses adaptive AI to detect and remediate advanced phishing attacks and their variants in real time. The service is managed through a single, cloud-based console, enabling centralized administration and streamlined protection for organizations against email-based threats. ThreatDown partnered with IRONSCALES, an AI-powered email security leader, on its Email Security product.[9]
- Vulnerability Assessment – ThreatDown Vulnerability Assessment helps organizations identify security weaknesses on endpoints before they can be exploited. It includes full vulnerability scanning for operating systems and applications, with options to run scans on demand or on a scheduled basis.
- Patch Management – ThreatDown Patch Management automates the patching process by applying software updates to address known vulnerabilities. By streamlining patch deployment, the solution helps organizations reduce potential attack surfaces and maintain compliance. This capability is designed to prevent exploitation of security flaws by ensuring timely updates across operating systems and applications.
- Application Block – ThreatDown Application Block allows organizations to prevent unauthorized programs from running on endpoints. This capability helps enforce acceptable-use policies and reduce the attack surface by stopping unwanted applications from launching, without adding extra cost or complexity.
- DNS Filtering – ThreatDown DNS Filtering blocks categories of inappropriate, suspicious, and malicious websites to reduce exposure to online threats. It enables organizations to enforce browsing policies, restrict access to risky domains, and support compliance requirements. The solution is centrally managed and designed for multi-tenancy environments, making it suitable for service providers and distributed organizations.[10]
- Mobile Security – ThreatDown Mobile Security protects devices running ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android from cyber threats.
- Managed Threat Hunting – ThreatDown Managed Threat Hunting provides continuous monitoring to identify and prioritize critical threats. The solution uses automated alert scanning that correlates endpoint detection and response (EDR) data with internal and external threat intelligence feeds. When high-risk activity is detected, the service escalates alerts and delivers step-by-step remediation guidance to security teams, enabling faster and more effective incident response.
- Premium Support – ThreatDown offers a premium support option that extends its standard support services with faster response time service-level agreements (SLAs) and expanded availability.
- Browser Phishing Protection – ThreatDown Browser Phishing Protection is designed to block phishing attacks, malicious links, drive-by downloads, and credential harvesting attempts. The feature helps protect sensitive data while maintaining user productivity by preventing browser-based threats during web activity.
- Firewall Management – ThreatDown offers a Firewall Management feature for the management and monitoring of Windows Firewall policies. The feature is designed to reduce complexity and save time by providing centralized control over firewall settings across endpoints.
- Security Advisor – ThreatDown Security Advisor uses AI to provide instant visibility into an organization’s security posture across thousands of endpoints. From a centralized dashboard, users can monitor implementation status, identify vulnerabilities, and take action to optimize protection. The feature also supports GDPR, CIPA, or HIPAA data regulations, governance expectations, and meets cyber insurance requirements with application-blocking reports.
- Nebula – ThreatDown’s Nebula platform is a single-tenant, cloud-based platform for unified endpoint security management for end-users. It provides centralized visibility and control across the entire security stack, enabling organizations to manage thousands of endpoints from a single console.
- OneView – ThreatDown’s OneView is a platform designed for managed service providers (MSPs) to deliver centralized visibility and security management across multiple customer environments. The platform simplifies endpoint security administration with easy-to-configure settings, dashboards, reporting, and notifications. It includes a single, lightweight endpoint agent, remote management capabilities, and tools for streamlined billing and reporting.
