Tim Trawsblaniad Cymru FC is a non-affiliated national football team located in South Wales, UK.
History
Tim Trawsblaniad Cymru Football was founded in 2019.
Tim Trawsblaniad Cymru (Wales Transplant Team) football was established by Shaun Thomas and Shaun Ruck, initially as a ‘Self help’ sporting project by Kidney Wales’ Ruck, attracting kidney transplant recipients across the South of Wales with the help of patient representative Thomas. Operating in two different locations to service patients in Cardiff and Swansea.
Transplant recipients who have had the following transplants are permitted to join: Heart, Lung, Liver, Kidney, Bone Marrow, Pancreas, Cornea.
After an unsuccessful attempt to create a team for the Birmingham Transplant Sport games in 2018, their sights were set firmly on the Home games of 2019 in Newport. The main strength of that sporting team being the football side – an attempt to merge the two locations together to enable the athletes to play and train together more often.
In March 2019, the first official side took to the field in Bicester, Oxfordshire for the annual Transplant Sport football competition. The squad went on to narrowly miss out on a bronze medal after a very slow start to proceedings.
That tournament, however, paved the way for bigger things to come, with both Thomas and Ruck working tirelessly to build a Welsh Patient sporting side to compete in Newport that coming July.
On July 29th 2019, TTC took to the field for only their second competition, playing sides from Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Oxford – the squad, made up of just 11 players due to injury, managed to take home the silver in the competition, narrowly missing out to Oxford Transplant by a goal to nil in the Finals.
Two players from that squad were then picked to compete with Team GB at the World Transplant Games in Newcastle that August: Adam Hughes and Ellis Thomas. Their next appearance came at the game for all cup in November 2019 – coming third behind Gobaith Cymru FC and Cardiff Northern Old Boys.
In January 2020, Ruck and Thomas set up a 2-hour training session at Pencoed college for the footballing side, having grown in numbers. This was headed up with the appointment of John Murphy as Head Coach and Louise Heylock as team physio.
During 2020, the side was told they would not be competing as an individual side at the inaugural 2020 Transplant World Cup in Italy – postponed due to Covid.
In 2020, the Squad were due to play full international games with transplant recipients from France, Italy, Holland and Ireland before the Covid-19 epidemic hit. The side hopes to re-organise these games at a later date.
Colours and badge
Tim Trawsblaniad Cymru colours are traditional red jersey, red shorts and green/white hooped socks - currently supplied by Kappa.
Tim Trawsblaniad Cymru badge was designed to represent transplantation in Wales by the team’s very own Ben Griffiths.
Ground
Tim Trawsblaniad Cymru currently play their home matches around the South Wales area, with training being held at Pencoed College's campus.
