William Todd Mason (born 1963) is an American businessperson who works in digital media in Washington, DC. He has served as creator, executive producer, broadcast director and executive in charge of production for cast talk shows and livestreaming of events.

Early life and education[edit]

Mason was born in Richmond, Virginia to Phillip Charles Mason and Virginia Reynolds Harris and is one of two children.[citation needed] At age 15, he became interested in TV production and volunteered as a cameraman at Grove Avenue Baptist Church.[1] He attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).[2]

Career[edit]

In 2018, Mason launched a full-time over-the-top (“OTT”) network for the brokerage and investment firm TD Ameritrade.[citation needed] In 2021, Todd created the world’s first major REMI broadcast hub that promotes centralized technology and decentralized staffing.[3][4][better source needed]

Todd directed two of Netflix’s cast talk shows Geeked, one for Cowboy Bebop, the second for The Witcher, which was shot in London.[citation needed]

For MGM, Todd has directed a live transmission of the anniversary celebration of Rocky IV the Director’s Cut[5] and the Raging Bull 4K screening.[citation needed]

Broadcast Management Group, LLC[edit]

In December 2005, Mason founded Mason Productions (later renamed Broadcast Management Group Inc.), a production management company. The company's first contract was with ESPN to provide production management for ESPN Hollywood. In 2006, Broadcast Management Group signed a contract with the DC Office of Cable Television and Telecommunications (OCTT) to design a full-service, high definition broadcast operation. The company was also contracted to market OCTT's broadcast facilities and to bring in commercial projects such as PBS's Think Tank with Ben Wattenberg and various shows for CNN.[6][7][better source needed]

In 2015 and 2016, Mason was the Executive in Charge of Production for truTV’s “Impractical Jokers Live Punishment” special. NorthSouth Productions, who produces the Impractical Jokers series, wanted to produce a live punishment special to commemorate the 100th episode of the series. Because NorthSouth did not have an expertise in live production, they contracted Mason to support the live special.[8][better source needed]

In 2018, Mason launched an OTT network for the brokerage firm, TD Ameritrade.[citation needed]

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Mason arranged for all on air talent and most of the crew members to work remotely from their homes instead of coming into the studios in NYC and Chicago.[9][better source needed] Mason and his team proposed continuing the “Market Drive” program as a Virtual Town Hall instead of an in-person live event.[9][better source needed] The six contributors were integrated into the live program using at-home kits.[9][better source needed] All talent and guests are on the shows are via Skype, LTN, VOIP lines via Encompas, Zoom or LiveU.[citation needed] The live broadcast was streamed to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Amazon Fire TV, and the TD Ameritrade Network website. TD Ameritrade’s first Virtual Town Hall drew 1.8 million viewers.[10][7][better source needed]

In 2021, Mason created the world’s first major REMI Broadcast Hub that promotes centralized technology and decentralized staffing.[11][better source needed]

In addition, Mason provided technical execution of a live-to-tape draft special leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft for the Las Vegas Raiders. In response to the pandemic, the entire production needed to be executed using the REMI workflow.[12][better source needed]

In 2022, Mason worked with James Goldston for the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack assisting with their televised public hearings.[8][13]

Atlantic Video, Inc[edit]

From 1998 to 2005, Mason was President and Chief Operating Officer of Washington, DC-based Atlantic Video, Inc.[1] During his seven years at Atlantic Video, he grew revenue nearly 400%, enhanced the company's staff, technology[14][better source needed] and reputation and acquired two other firms. Atlantic Video buys Potomac Media Relations all while expanding into new markets.[15][better source needed] Mason was also responsible for launching several shows on ESPN, including “Pardon the Interruption, Around the Horn, Cheap Seats and Cold Pizza.[16][17][better source needed] Mason also founded Atlantic Creative, an original program development production company, where he produced several shows and served as co-creator and Executive Producer of Animal Planet's Pet Psychic starring Sonya Fitzpatrick.[18][19][20][better source needed]

Henninger Media Services, Inc.[edit]

In 1990 Mason was recruited to Henninger Media Services a Washington DC based broadcast post production company as Senior Vice President and eventually assuming the, General Manager and Chief Financial Officer duties.[2][better source needed] The company started a joint venture with Robert Dineo's Tribeca Film Center creating one of the first non-liner film editing companies in the country called Tribeca Henninger Editing Tools (the Tools) with offices in Los Angeles and New York.[2][better source needed]
