Toebow is an indie musical project formed by friends and albumi of BOBBY, formerly of Partisan Records
Beginnings[edit]
Toebow was formed by Martin Zimmermann and Nate Ulsh in 2013. Both members moved to New York City in 2012 to participate in dream-pop group BOBBY, which Zimmermann had played drums in since 2010. After BOBBY was put on indefinite hiatus in October 2012, Toebow began almost immediately in its wake as a surrogate project for Ulsh and Zimmermann, with Toebow's debut show occurring in Brooklyn in January 2013 at Bushwick Loft Unit J. Another member of BOBBY, Maia Friedman, joined Toebow in Spring of 2013. Jo-Anne Hyun began playing bass in the project within a month after the band's first show. In 2015, the group expanded to included Charlie Kessenich (also of ensemble et al). Friedman left the line-up in 2017, with Olenka Burgess joining in the same year.
Music[edit]
Toebow's music is characterized by a male and female lead vocal, three backup vocals, two guitars which are commonly pitch-shifted, meticulous drum patterns which sometimes incorporate samples, and deep pockets of bass guitar. Brooklyn Vegan described Toebow's music as "...a nice dose of shapeshifting, complex art pop..."
Toebow self-released an EP called "Spirit Mane" in 2018 and a follow-up full-length album "Themes" in 2019 on Imaginator Records. The band toured briefly in 2017 and then again in 2019 around the East Coast, Midwest and Southern United States in support of the release of "Themes."
Reviews[edit]
BrooklynVegan wrote that the band was "...a nice dose of shapeshifting, complex art pop..." [7]
Everything Is Noise wrote of debut LP "Themes" was "...a magical carpet ride...an experience you shouldn’t miss..." [8]
