Tom Newlands

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Tom Newlands (born 1980)[1] is a Scottish writer.

Early and personal life

Newlands was born in Perth, and is neurodivergent.[2] He formerly worked in a warehouse and started writing only at age 40, when put on furlough during the COVID lockdown.[3] He has cited a lack of role models as a reason for his late start as a writer.[4]

Writing

Newland's first novel, Only Here, Only Now was published in June 2024 in the U.K,[5] and November 2024 in the U.S.[6] It won the Society of Authors McKitterick prize,[7] was runner up for the Society of Authors ADCI prize,[8] was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize[9] and was chosen as a fiction book of the year in The Guardian.[10] The Observer described it as a "stunning debut."[11] In the U.S. Publishers Weekly named him as a writer to watch[12] and gave the book a rare starred review.[13] In 2025 Newlands was appointed to the Creative Future advisory Board.[14]

Newlands' work has appeared in the New Statesman,[15] New Writing Scotland,[16] and on BBC Radio Wales.[17]
