Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft is an upcoming action-adventure game developed and published by Aspyr. It is a collection of remasters of the first three games in the Tomb Raider series: Tomb Raider (1996), Tomb Raider II (1997), and Tomb Raider III (1998); all of which were originally developed by Core Design. The games follow archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft as she travels through ancient ruins and tombs in search of ancient artefacts. Remastered is scheduled to be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on 14 February 2024.[2]
Gameplay[edit]
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is a collection of remasters of the first three games in the original Tomb Raider series developed by Core Design: Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II, and Tomb Raider III.[2] Each game features archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft traveling through a series of ancient ruins and tombs in search of ancient artefacts.[3][4][5] Like in the original games, Lara uses two pistols with infinite ammo by default in combat, and can run, walk (which prevents her from falling off ledges), look around areas, jump forwards and backwards, shimmy along ledges, roll, swim through bodies of water, and move blocks.[4][6]
Development and release[edit]
Prior to the announcement of Remastered, Realtech VR attempted to remaster the first three Tomb Raider titles, originally developed by Core Design, for Windows in 2018, but due to not having asked permission from then-franchise owner Square Enix first, the project was cancelled.[7] Following Embracer Group's acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and several other assets of Square Enix Limited in 2022, the holding company expressed interest in sequels, remakes, and remasters in established franchises they acquired, including Tomb Raider.[8]
Remastered was officially revealed during a Nintendo Direct presentation on 14 September 2023, set for release on 14 February 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.[9][10][11] Development is led by the Embracer-owned Aspyr, who previously ported early Tomb Raider titles to macOS.[12][13][14] According to Crystal Dynamics, Remastered will feature "the ability to toggle on the fly between enhanced and original graphics, as well as switch between classic and modern joystick control schemes", alongside "a variety of quality-of-life improvements, including camera lock-on and achievements".[2] The expansion packs for the original trilogy—Unfinished Business, Golden Mask, and The Lost Artefact—will also be included in the remaster.[2][15]
