Topface is a dating website[1] founded in 2011, with headquarters in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. It receives 1.6 million visitors daily, and has a user base of 92 million.[2][3] A Topface app is available on iOS, Android and on Facebook.

History[edit]

In 2010 Sonetica, a company owned by Dmitry Filatov and an undisclosed partner, purchased a popular VK app called FaceRate (Russian: Лицемер) that allowed users to rate each other’s photos. This idea evolved into something bigger, and in 2011, Topface launched as an online dating service.[4]

This new service provides messaging and social features.

In its first year, Topface acquired 37 million users.[1]

In 2012, Topface was 4thFacebook dating app by MAU with 3,5 million unique users in a month[5].

In 2013, Fast Company listed Topface as one of its ten Russian innovative companies of the year.[6] According to Fast Company, Topface earned the tenth spot on its list for "championing a local, online dating scene".

In 2014, it gained 81 million users.[7]

In January 2015, an attacker obtained 20 million email addresses of Topface users. The attacker, going under the moniker Mastermind, told reporters that the purpose of the attack was to raise awareness of the practice of dating websites using fake profiles to attract users.[8]

A week later it was reported that Filatov, Topface's CEO, said that the company and the hacker had arrived at a mutually satisfactory arrangement that included a monetary reward paid to the hacker, and future cooperation regarding site security.[9]

In September 2015, Filatov announced on his Facebook page that Topface had registered 100 million users.[3][2] According to its owners, Topface had been gaining 3 million users a day in its heyday.[4]

Features[edit]

Registration is free. The service enables looking for penpals, the pursuit of cultural exchange, or "maybe even something more."[10]

The service's main feature is photo rating. Browsing the feed, a user can send a 'Like' to another user and receive a 'Like' in return.

If a Like is mutual, users can start messaging one another.

Various additional features are available for VIP-users and can be purchased for 'Coins' (an in-app currency).

Platforms[edit]

Financials[edit]

Topface is a freemium service and its revenue is based on both in-app ads and in-app purchases.[11]
