Tore Børvik (born 2 August 1967 in Narvik, Norway) is a Norwegian professor at the Department of Structural Engineering,[1] Faculty of Engineering[2] at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. His special fields are modelling, simulation and testing of materials and structures exposed to extreme loads. He is deputy head of the Centre for Advanced Structural Analysis (SFI CASA)[3] (2015–2023) at the Department of Structural Engineering. This is a Centre for Research-based Innovation, administered by the Research Council of Norway.

Education and career[edit]

Børvik graduated with a MSc engineer degree from the Department of Structural Engineering at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) in 1991. He wrote his master's thesis on protective components. The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency became interested in his work and he was given the opportunity to do his military service as a researcher at NTH. He defended the dissertation Ballistic Penetration and Perforation of Steel Plates[4] in 2001, and was awarded the degree of dr.ing.

From 1993 to 2011, he worked as a senior adviser in the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency's research and development department, and, from 2002 to 2011, he was also employed as an adjunct professor at SIMLab, Department of Structural Engineering at NTNU. In 2012, he was appointed professor at Department of Structural Engineering and SIMLab. Since 2012, he has had a 20 per cent position as a senior adviser in the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency research and development department.

Børvik helped to build the research group SIMLab.[5] SIMLab now hosts SFI CASA, where in addition to being deputy chairman, Børvik heads the Structures programme.[6] He is also part of the core team in the FRIPRO Toppforsk project FractAl[7] (Microstructure-based Modelling of Ductile Fracture in Aluminium Alloys) (2016–2021).
