Toshihiro Goto (Japanese: 五藤利弘 Goto Toshihiro; 1968年 - ) is a Japanese screenwriter and film director.

Toshihiro Goto is a film director from the Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture. He was born in 1968 and is a member of the Writers Guild of Japan. Goto entered independently produced films in both the 3rd and the 4th Japan Indies Film Festivals. He has also played an active role in planning, making, directing, producing, and script writing for numerous TV programs, including Nippon TV's News Every, Kyou no Dekigoto, and NNN Document, Fuji TV's NONFIX and The Nonfiction.[1][2]

Goto has become known for his work with upcoming young actors. In 2009, he made his debut as a filmmaker with Monochrome Girl [3]. The lead actor, Saki Terashima, was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Tokyo Sports Film Award. In 2011, his film White Rabbit in Snow, which starred Nozomu Iwao and Anna Ishibashi was shown at the 3rd Okinawa International Film Festival. In 2013, he released the film Yume no Kayoji [Path of Dreams], starring Anna Ishibashi and Seika Taketomi. In 2014, he released Hanahasu: Karen, starring Takahiro Miura and Mayu Kitaki, and Yume Haruka, starring Miyu Yoshimoto. In 2017, his film Lemmings Summer won an Audience Award at the Hakodate Harbor Illumination Film Festival. In 2019, he released the mockumentary film Utsukushisugiru Giin [Too Beautiful to be a Politician][4][5][6][7]. In 2020, he released the film Hiroshima Piano,[8][9][10][11][12][13]a feature-length film, starring Shiro Sato and Tomu Muto[14][15], based on his novel Okasan no Hibaku Piano[16].

Life and career[edit]

Goto resides in the city of Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture. Upon graduating from Nagaoka Koryo High School in Niigata Prefecture, he entered university. He created his first film, an Indies film, while he was still a student, taking charge of production, screenwriting, directing, and screening. He has since gone on to release film after film.[2]

In 2008, Goto chose his home region, Chūetsu in Niigata Prefecture, as the stage for his feature-length film Monochrome Girl. He carried out the planning, screenwriting and directing for this film, and screenwriting. Akiko Ashizawa, known for her work with the Akira Kurosawa on films such as Loft and Retribution, was responsible for cinematography.[17]

In 2010, Goto returned to his home region to film Yume no Kayoji [Path of Dreams]. Shot mainly in the Tochiomachi district of Nagaoka by the cinematographer, Akiko Ashizawa, the film starred Anna Ishibashi and Seika Taketomi.[18]

In 2011, Goto's film White Rabbit in Snow, starring the Japanese comedian Nozomu Iwao and Anna Ishibashi featured at the 3rd Okinawa International Film Festival, which was held from March 18 to March 27.[19][20][21]

In 2020, Goto's film Hiroshima Piano screened at the Hiroshima International Film Festival. Set in Hiroshima 75 years after the atomic bomb ripped through the city, the story follows Nanako, played by Tomu Muto (AKB48), as she searches to understand her family's roots in Hiroshima, her grandmother's past, the atomic blast, and the significance of Hiroshima pianos.[22][23][24] The film, which is available with English subtitles[25], arguably marks a turning point in Goto's filmmaking career as he reaches out to audiences worldwide.[26] On March 21, 2021, Hiroshima Piano won a Japanese Reconstruction Film Award for in recognition of its depiction of life after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
