History[edit]
Formation & Black Sheep (2016–2018)[edit]
Officially formed in 2016 in Cascais, Portugal, Toxikull was born from it’s early form Toxic Room,[3] a project that endured from 2013 to 2016. Initially the project focused on covers and mainly playing at local bars and venues. After one year of playing live performances, the band decided to record their first original songs in a professional way. "Little Piece of Hell" came out in 2014, independently, and with it the band won a few national contests.[which?][citation needed]
In 2016 they decided to reform with a new image and a new sound so Toxikull was born. The first line up consisted of Lex Thunder (lead vocals, guitar), Antim “The Viking” (vocals, bass), Leander Sandmeier (lead guitar) and The Lorke (drums). In February of 2016, through Non Nobis Productions,[4] the band released their first full length piece “Black Sheep”. The album had a wide variety of metal genres with a big influence in Heavy Thrash n’roll. The record allowed them to play over 60 Shows in 2 Years, covering Portugal & Spain, opening for acts such as Angelus Apatrida and Dead Lord.[5][6]
At the end of 2016, Leander Sandmeier left the group to pursue other projects soon replaced by Michael Blade (Lex Thunder’s Brother).[7]
In 2017 they had an Iberian tour titled “The Black Sheep Tour”[8]
The Nightraiser EP (2018–2019)[edit]
in late 2017, Toxikull entered the studio to record what would be a complete change in the core of the band. In March 2018 [9], they released their first edition of “The Nightraiser” Released by Mosher Records and Firecum Records. Shifting their sound to a more traditional heavy metal style, focusing in mixing heavy metal with speed metal and the typical voices of the 80’s genre scene. The EP had an amazing reception by the die-hard metal fans and the heavy metal press.
A cover of "Rocker" by Hollywood Rose was featured in the EP.
In an interview following the release Lex Thunder stated:
“It’s an appeal to rebellion and some social criticism. Music-wise, this EP is a bit different from ‘Black Sheep’ – it’s faster, stronger and more aggressive. The influences of the music from the past are also a bit different, this one’s a more on the speed/heavy metal side.”[10]
With “The Nightraiser”, Toxikull started to be noted by the international metal press[11][10], interest surging from promoters to include the band in several Iberian festivals expanding their notoriety in the region. The played in fests such as Moita Metal Fest[12], Comendatio Metal Fest[13], Palacio Metal Fest[14], Mosher Fest[15], Laurus Nobils[16], Vagos Metal Fest[17] & Skulls of Metal[18]. They were also the opening act in tour for Crystal Viper[19] and the opening act for Skull Fist.[20]
By the end of 2018 another line up change occurred. Drummer "The Lorke” left the band, being replaced by Garras on the drums.
Cursed and Punished (2019–present)[edit]
In May of 2019, after the “Iberian Metal Attack Tour",[21] Toxikull went to Demigod Studios [22] to record their 2nd full length album “Cursed and Punished” released through Metal on Metal Records[23]. Inspired by the change in style and success of “The Nightraiser” they continued mixing speed, Thrash, Punk and Heavy Metal. It was released in September of 2019.
“Cursed and Punished” is a thrash metal fans dream. TOXIKULL pay homage to their thrash predecessors while simultaneously elevating 80's styled metal to a level that I do not even think could exist. I am so impressed at how they can show so much brilliance in their thrash. The music is so intricate, beautiful, and chaotic all at once. Put this album in your rotation immediately, because it an absolute homerun.”[2]
James Brizuela - Metal Temple
The album has been compared to the likes of Judas Priest mixing 80's inspired heavy metal vocals and testament due to the speed and interpretation of the songs.[1]
Musical style[edit]
Heavily inspired by the 80's traditional heavy metal music, Toxikull have a mixture of heavy metal, thrash metal, speed and punk. The two singers provide a duality in the heavy/thrash sequence, Lex Thunder maintaining the 80's high pitch singing while The Viking giving the more raw 90's thrash metal vocals. Toxikull have been compared to the likes of Judas Priest, Agent Steel, Testament, Enforcer, early Helloween, Scanner_band, Helstar, Evil Invaders and Mercyful Fate.[24]
