Toy Story In Real Life is a 2020 comedy-adventure fan film by the Iowa-based Morgan and Mason McGrew; it is a shot-by-shot recreation of the 2010 computer-animated film of the same name, with the toy characters animated through stop-motion or filmed moving with wires and strings.

Plot

As the now 17-year-old Andy is preparing for college, the toys, whom Andy has not played with for years, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, Slinky, Hamm, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, whom Mrs. Potato Head lost her eye under the bed, the Aliens, and three toy soldiers, despondently reflect on their future, while the soldiers parachute out the window and leave. Andy intends to take Woody to college and place the other toys in the attic in a trash bag, only for Andy's mother mistakenly puts the bag outside, mistaking it for garbage. The toys narrowly escape from the garbage truck, and, feeling Andy decided to throw them away, get into a donation box in Andy's mother's car with Molly's old Barbie doll. Woody follows to convince the toys of Andy's true intentions as Andy's mother takes the box of donations to Sunnyside Daycare, but fails.

At Sunnyside, Andy's toys are welcomed by Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear ("Lotso"), a baby doll named Big Baby, a Ken doll whom Barbie falls in love with, and the various toys at Sunnyside. The toys learn that Sunnyside never runs out of children. After another failed attempt to convince the toys to return home, Woody tries to get back to Andy's, only to be found by a child from Sunnyside named Bonnie, who brings him home and plays with him and her other toys, which includes Chuckles, a toy clown. They are shocked that Woody escaped from Sunnyside. Chuckles explains that he, Lotso, and Big Baby were toys that got lost during a trip with a family that included their owner, a girl named Daisy. Lotso found out that he had been replaced when they returned home and lied that they all had been replaced. They rode a truck to Sunnyside, where Lotso took over, turning it into a toy prison. Chuckles was eventually broken and later found by Bonnie.

At Sunnyside, after a rough playtime with the kids at Sunnyside, Buzz asks Lotso to move the toys to the older children's room, but Lotso allows only Buzz into the room and has him switched to his original Demo mode factory settings, later imprisoning the rest of the toys, though not before they realize Woody was telling the truth after Mrs. Potato Head sees Andy searching for his toys through her lost eye.

Upon returning to Sunnyside, Woody is told by Chatter Telephone that the trash chute is the only way of escape. After subduing Lotso's night watchman monkey, they try to reset Buzz back to himself, only to reset him to Spanish mode, who later falls in love with Jessie. The toys are confronted by Lotso, who is thrown into the dumpster by Big Baby after Woody reveals Lotso's deception, though not before Lotso pulls Woody into the dumpster. The toys jump in as a truck arrives, trapping them in the truck, where Buzz resets to normal after a television falls onto him.

The toys end up in a landfill, where they are separated from the Aliens. After avoiding a shredder, they end up in an incinerator, where Lotso leaves them behind. As they await their fate, the Aliens save them with an industrial claw. Meanwhile, Lotso is found by a garbageman and fastened onto a truck's radiator grille with other fastened toys.

After returning home, the toys hop into a box while Woody leaves a note for Andy, who thinks it's from his mom. Andy donates the toys to Bonnie and they play together before he leaves for college as the toys watch his departure.

In the aftermath, Barbie, Ken, and Big Baby vastly improved Sunnyside as new toys, including the toy soldiers start coming to Sunnyside. Barbie, Ken, and Big Baby write letters to the toys, who are starting a new life with Bonnie, to maintain contact with them.

Production

The project started after the McGrew brothers saw Toy Story 3 on its opening night.[1]

In 2015, they uploaded photos of the replica they created of Andy’s room, which was actually their room used as a set for the scenes in Andy's room, which went viral.[1]

In 2018 and 2019, they uploaded trailers that picked up 2.5 million views on YouTube.[1]
