The Trade Me Project is a project created by Demi Skipper that sought to trade a bobby pin for a house.[1] The project began as a TikTok series on May 18, 2020 and ended on December 11, 2021. The idea for the project is based off the project by Kyle MacDonald that traded a red paperclip for a house. The idea is not to directly trade a bobby pin for a house, but rather to trade the bobby pin for another item worth slightly more, and then trade the new item for something worth slightly more, and so on.[2]

The series concluded in December 2021 when Demi Skipper made her last trade for a house, with a total of 28 trades having been made.[3] Skipper states that she plans to renovate the house, and then "trade the house for a bobby-pin". Adding, “I’m going to give the house away to somebody who really needs it.”[2] She has also said that, after giving the house away, she plans to do it all over again.[4]

Rules and Process for Trading[edit]

Demi Skipper finds individuals who are interested in the current item that she has, and are willing to make a trade. She does not allow herself to make a trade with any person that she personally knows. The trades also are not allowed to include any cash, and have to be a direct exchange of 2 items. She said that the trades she makes can take days to plan, prepare for, and execute. She says that she does a lot of research on every item that she is offered to be sure that she understands the true value and worth of it. She also said that she had "Biked to all corners of San Francisco" to make trades.[10]

Notes[edit]

  1. Click citation next to each trade for the video of the trade
  2. During this trade, her package had been lost in the mail. After believing that the trade was a total loss, her package was found and was delivered to her.
  3. During this trade, she found a person interested in trading but was struggling to find an item that he had that they could trade for, she sent him a list of items she would trade for. He wound up buying one of the items on the list (the iPhone) in order to make the trade.
  4. During this trade, the car that she had received did not have a parking permit, so she only had three days to make a trade. The car had many problems that also made it difficult to trade, with many people considering a trade before taking a closer look at the car, and then backing out.
  5. For this trade, she found a person who was willing to make the trade and had a mechanic who could fix the car. With just one day left, she decided that she needed to make the trade.
  6. For this trade, she had to drive to Los Angeles, California.
  7. For this trade, she had to ship the Bike to North Carolina from San Francisco.
  8. This trade was an unintentional significant downgrade in value. The appraisal value for the necklace was much higher than that of the retail value, making it worth much less than she had expected.
  9. This trade required a redesign of the cabin, so Skipper hired an interior designer in co-operation with the company Fiverr.
  10. The car more cosmetic issues than originally expected, such as scratches and a fairly large dent in one of the doors. In a partnership with AutoZone, she upgraded the car.
  11. This trade was done in co-operation with Chipotle.
  12. This trade drew some backlash, many upset at a perceived downgrade. Skipper made a video addressing this concern, stating that she believed the value of the card would be worth more than that of the tractors.
