From 2017 to 2021 Trafi has been providing shared mobility solutions for cities with real-time data of different transport modes that assist citizens in building suitable travel routes. "Trafi for cities" technology is currently active in cities worldwide. Since 2019 Trafi is a partner with BVG and powers its Jelbi mobility app[3] for Berlin citizens.Trafi also powers the MVG app in Munich (2020)[4], MAAS app in Bogota (2021)[5], and has recently launched the Breeze app in the Solent region of the UK (2021)[6]

Since 2021 Trafi has developed another core product - Trafi for Business[7], which concentrates on helping corporations by providing employees mobility budgets for sustainable commuting.

History[edit]

Trafi originally started as www.marsrutai.lt in Vilnius and was founded by Jurgis Pašukonis (former CEO), Mantas Vizbaras (currently Operations Director) in 2006 with Algimantas Krasauskas (currently People Director) joining in 2007. Firstly it was a hobby project until 2013 when Martynas Gudonavicius joined as CEO and helped the team to attract the seed round led by Practica Capital.[8]

In 2015 the service collected A series funding round[9], was renamed "Trafi" and started functioning as B2C with the first MaaS app launched in Vilnius in 2018.[10]

Trafi closed series A fundraising in 2020 backed by Octopus Ventures, EBRD, Sumitomo Corporation, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance.[11]

Since 2015: Trafi for Cities[12][edit]

Trafi for Cities product was focused on building connected mobility routes in cities. It was launched in 2015. Currently, Trafi for cities is active in Klaipeda, Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevezys, Siauliai, Lithuania; Riga, Latvia; Brussels, Belgium; Sao Paulo, and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Tallinn, Estonia; Madrid, Spain; Jakarta, Indonesia; Ankara, Bursa, Istanbul, and Izmir, Turkey.[13]

Jelbi/BVG[14][edit]

Trafi launched BVG Jelbi platform within 6 months for Berlin citizens in 2019. Trafi provided not only a white label solution that was customized to BVG's branding but also a sophisticated MaaS API (backend) system to power it. BVG Jelbi integrates all public transport and shared mobility options with over 15,000 vehicles, into one app where Berliners can find, plan, book, and pay for all trips with PayPal, credit, or debit cards. In 2021 Trafi won Jelbi tender to continue the project.[2]

Solent/Breeze[edit]

Breeze MaaS app was launched in the Solent region of the UK at the beginning of 2022.[15] The app integrates shared mobility solutions such as bikes, e-bikes, mopeds, ferries, buses, scooters, e-scooters. It provides the users with real-time traffic updates and incorporates sustainability ratings of certain vehicles. Breeze includes a user travel card and in-app public transit tickets.

MAAS app Bogotā[edit]

In 2021 Trafi launched the MAAS app in Bogota, Columbia.[16] The project took 5 months from signing the contract to the first stage of the app launch. Residents are able to plan, book their trips as well as track public transport in real-time data.

MVG Munich[edit]

Mobility as a Service app MVGO, powered by Trafi, was developed over a year and launched in Munich in February 2021. MVGO is an integrated MaaS platform with a corresponding app that lets users find, book, and pay for shared mobility services from one place. The app allows users to track the real-time movement of the public transit and has a built-in driver's license verification.[17]

Since 2022: Trafi for Business[18][edit]

Trafi's main product provides a MaaS platform for corporates so they can equip their employees with mobility budgets. The main idea of the app is to attract and retain talents as well as commit to sustainability.  It works in a way that the employer sets up a designated mobility budget for each of their employee and follows the number of rides and spendings. The employee is able to plan their trip to work or anywhere, choose between varieties of transportation modes available in the app such as scooters, e-bikes, mopeds, car-sharing, public transit, taking a sustainability factor of each vehicle into their commuting routine; paying for the ticket with a mobility budget in the same app.

Integrated Mobility Partners[edit]

Trafi has a growing partnership network. Currently, the MaaS provider is partners with the following high-profile companies such as Nextbike, Dott, Donkey Republic, Emmy, Spark, Tier, Voi, Bird, Miles.[19]

Sustainability[edit]

Trafi has been committed to sustainability and reached carbon neutrality in 2021. Trafi has emitted 615 tons of CO2 in 2020. Almost 95% of their emissions were Scope 3 - indicating that the emissions were produced by the digital and energy-consuming activity. 50% of emissions are related to the end-users of Trafi's product; 33% - purchased IT equipment, 15% - employee activity such as office buildings, commutes, and remote work.

To reduce its operational emissions, Trafi has committed to various environmental and social initiatives:[20]

  • Trafi reduces employee commuting emissions and helps to reduce the commuting emissions of its clients.
  • Trafi's employees are supporting environmental NGOs with their technical and professional skills.
  • Trafi has committed to calculating and reducing the emissions of its digital operations. Although digital emissions that are created by using the servers and digital operations of its supply chain are contributing to nearly 90% of the company's total emissions, there are no industry guidelines nor targets for its reduction. Therefore, Trafi became an initiator of the joint working group[21] to share the knowledge on reduction of scope 3 and digital emissions.[22]

Company Culture[edit]

Trafi has 114 employees as of 2021, with Martynas Gudonavičius as a CEO since 2013. Trafi is a remote-first company but utilizes a hybrid working mode that allows all their employees to work either from home or from any of the four offices in Vilnius, Paris, Berlin, or London. According to Culture Amp[23] New Tech 2020 benchmark Trafi is among top 10% of companies globally for employee engagement score.[24]
