Evrim Ağacı is the largest and most visited Turkish popular science organization, which aims to educate the Turkish public on a vast variety of sciences with a special focus on evolutionary biology and its applications.

Evrim Ağacı means "Tree of Evolution" in Turkish, and is a reference to the depiction of the evolutionary relationship of species arranged in a "tree" form. Evrim Ağacı, founded on November 5, 2010, is the oldest, most reliable, and most visited popular science website in Turkey. Evrim Ağacı creates science content in a variety of formats, including popular science articles, educational videos, informational photos, and novel platforms like board games. This is all accomplished through our website, Facebook Page, Facebook Group, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. Evrim Ağacı reaches millions of people monthly in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Germany, Austria, USA, and Canada. One of the biggest goals of the organization is to become a respected science organization with its roots in Turkey, to promote science in Turkey and in the international arena. As a vision, Evrim Ağacı hopes to improve scientific understanding in and outside of Turkey.

Tree of Evolution (Turkish: Evrim Ağacı), is a brand founded by the "Biology and Genetics Society" at the Middle East Technical University (METU) with the leadership of Çağrı Mert Bakırcı on November 5, 2010.[1] Many students, academics, lecturers and professors also played an important role in the development stage of this social entrepreneurship. Today, it continues its journey in Lubbock, Texas as a popular science company making multidimensional publications for Turkish-speaking people all over the world. In addition, evrimagaci.org is the largest popular science platform in Turkey in terms of website user numbers.[2][3]

Tree of Evolution is supported by the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB), both financially and academically.[4][5] ESEB also examined their website and publications by evolutionary biology academics and confirmed that the content is of high quality.[4][6] As of February 23, 2018, it has been operating as a "Tree of Evolution" brand and company in Texas, USA.

Works

Activities organized by Tree of Evolution include seminars, conferences, courses and academic programs. Thousands of people have participated in an event called "Turkey Meets with Evolution" that was organized in many different cities such as Ankara, Istanbul, İzmir, Bursa, and Eskişehir.

Further, Tree of Evolution organizes "METU Aykut Kence Evolution Conference"[7] which is Turkey's longest ongoing and most participative evolutionary biology event. Many academics, students and citizens participate in this annual event. Leading figures in evolutionary biology such as Francisco J. Ayala, Douglas J. Futuyma, Jerry Coyne, Stephen Oppenheimer, Kenneth R. Miller, Eva Jablonka, Andrew Berry, John Gowlett, Octávio Mateus have been hosted by Tree of Evolution in Turkey.[8][9] Besides, Tree of Evolution attended, as a guest, the "Free Thought and Secularism" Conference organized with the participation of Sean Faircloth from the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
