Trevon "Tre" Lane (also known as Travon and "Tray") is a former associate of Death Row Records. He is known for being attacked by a group of Crips led by Orlando Anderson, as this incident set off a chain of events that led to the murder of Tupac Shakur on 7 September 1996.[1]

Death Row Records[edit]

Lane was a close friend of Suge Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records and a member of the Mob Piru Bloods, a gang which Knight was also affiliated with.[2] The police described Lane as one of "Suge's thugs".[3] At some point, Knight gave Lane a gold Death Row Records chain as a gift.[4]

Lakewood mall incident[edit]

Several months before the shooting of Tupac Shakur, Lane was at the Lakewood Mall, with two other Mob Pirus, Kevin Woods and Marice Combs.[5] In a Foot Locker store, Lane was attacked by a group of South Side Crips, led by Orlando Anderson, who stole Lane's Death Row chain during the altercation.[1][5]

MGM Brawl[edit]

On 7 September 1996, Shakur, Knight and several associates of Death Row Records, including Lane, went to Las Vegas to attend the Bruce Seldon vs. Mike Tyson boxing match. After the match, the Death Row entourage were walking in the lobby of the MGM Grand Hotel, where Lane spotted Anderson. After Lane whispered something in Shakur's right ear,[6] Shakur allegedly went to Anderson and asked "You from the South?",[7] referring to the South Side Compton Crips. Then Shakur punched Anderson, knocking him to the ground and the rest of the Death Row entourage continued beating him.[8]

Several hours after this brawl, Shakur was shot four times in a drive-by shooting when his vehicle stopped at a red light.[9] Shakur was taken to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he died six days later.

Depictions in media[edit]

  • Lane is portrayed in the 2017 film All Eyez on Me, where he is portrayed by Dashun Woodard.[10] In the film, a bruised Lane comes to the Death Row Records office and informs Knight and Shakur that he had been attacked at the mall.
  • Dashun Woodard also portrays Lane in the 2018 series Unsolved, where the altercation at the Lakewood mall is portrayed.[11]
  • Lane is mentioned as "Tre" in Tupac Shakur's song "To Live & Die in L.A.", from his album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory.
