Petrie was born in Melbourne, Victoria, however the family moved to Kyneton in 1983 where he attended Kyneton Secondary College, before going on to complete an Associate Diploma of Engineering Electronics at the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE. After completing his studies, Petrie moved to Bendigo in 1999 fast becoming a mainstay of the local original music scene.

It was in 2004 that he met long time friend and band-mate Brian Hosking, with whom he would go on to form Anti Social Commentary. During this time the band played throughout Central Victoria, releasing three EP's 'Pray for Friday', 'Everything You Want to Achieve' and 'It All Starts Again' between 2004 and 2013. A full length album was tracked in 2008 but never released.

Writing and performing from a young age, Petrie turned to his song writing during difficult times and in 2014 announced that he had been suffering from anxiety and depression for close to fifteen years. Turning to a friend from his youth, Tamra Mercieca (author, therapist, and founder of Getting Naked Pty Ltd.) Petrie was able to overcome the depression and in 2015 released his debut solo EP Lion in the Closet: A song Petrie wrote about his journey in overcoming depression[4][5].

Moving back to Bendigo, having lived in Castlemaine[6] for the three years prior, Petrie formed a new band 'The War of Ideas' with former Anti Social Commentary members: Brian Hosking and Steve Myers. The War of Ideas released their debut EP 'The Beauty of Solitude" on 4 November 2017[7]

In that same year, Petrie established his own indie record label: Poppet Head Records, a label dedicated to supporting and showcasing independent artists from the Bendigo region.

Petrie works closely with artists to help them develop their craft and has recently established a partnership with Ladd Studios, offering songwriting as a service.
