True North is an Los Angeles-based alternative rock band currently signed to Out of Line Music..[1] The band's lineup currently consists of Tim Beken (lead vocals), Joel Ferber (lead guitar), Sean Hansen (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Morgan Kibler (bass guitar) and Michael Cisterna (drums).[2]
History[edit]
2015-2019: Formation and early days[edit]
True North was formed in 2015 while the members attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California.[3] The initial lineup consisted of Sean Hansen on lead vocals, Joel Ferber on lead guitar, Tim Beken on rhythm guitar and vocals, Victor Kusaka on bass, and Michael Cisterna on drums. In 2016, the band recorded and self-released their debut EP, The Sky, The Lie, and Who We Are Before We Die. The EP was recorded at James Michael's studio in Los Angeles and mixed by Anthony Reeder.
In late 2016, Michael Cisterna and Victor Kusaka left the band and were replaced by Alex Frizzell and Morgan Kibler, respectively.[4][5] Throughout 2017, the band released several singles, and in 2018, they released their second EP titled Dream/Awake. Around this time, Beken and Hansen would go on to switch roles in the band, with the former taking on lead vocal duties exclusively and the latter performing rhythm guitar and background vocal duties.
2020-present: Singles, The Closer You Get EP and debut album[edit]
2020 saw the return of Cisterna on drums, as well as the release of several singles throughout that summer. During this time, the band released 4 new singles – "Piece of You," "Tearing at the Seams," "Nocturnal" and "Fake Love" – and would go on to release an acoustic EP in the fall entitled The Closer You Get, which they wrote and recorded during the early stages of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In early 2021, the band signed to German rock label Out Of Line Music and on July 15, 2022, they released their debut album, Out Loud. The album features several singles including "Your Confession" with guest vocals from Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens[6] and "Out Loud" featuring Aaron Gillespie of Underoath.[7]
The band is set to embark on their first US tour this fall with Sleeping With Sirens[8], followed by a co-headlining run with Takers Leavers[9]
Musical style[edit]
The band's sound has been described as alternative rock,[10] pop-rock,[11] emo,[12] and post-hardcore.[13]
