Tsar is a heavily modified T-72B3 obr.2022 tank that was used by the Russian Armed Forces during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. It was equipped with drone jamming equipment that could jam drones that were operating on different frequencies. It was captured by the Azov Brigade on 5 April 2024 near the Ukrainian village of Terny.[1]
History
In early 2024, Russian forces launched an armored assault on the Ukrainian village of Terny with the village becoming heavily contested.[2][3] On the night of 5 April 2024, the Azov Brigade attacked a Russian tank convoy.[4][5] The Azov Brigade claimed to have killed 50 Russian soldiers during the ambush.[6][7] They also showed images of a heavily modified T-72B3 obr.2022 tank they had captured named Tsar.[8][9] They reported on their telegram that Tsar's drone-jamming had been notably effective and included the ability to counter large numbers of drones with guidance systems operating on different frequencies.[10] They also reported that the Tsar was in drivable condition and that its crew had abandoned it.[11] Afterwards members of the Azov Brigade painted a Wolfsangel on the tank and took a picture with it.
