Tug Wilson was a fictional English footballer who played mainly as a defender and later a manager and appeared in the We are United comic strip in the British boys' comic Champ and the Football Picture Monthly Story. He first appeared in February 1984. His fact file on Champ was number 5 in 1984. Tug was sporting a distinctive black mustache.
This name first appeared in ROTR in 1957-58, when Tug Wilson was a Rovers Reserves forward.
Career
Club
He was born Bertram Wilson in 1953 but he was known as ‘’Tug’’ Wilson. He started his career as a midfielder playing for Third Division Bradport Albion and in 1973 United signed him for £100,000. Manager Ron Boston converted him to a full back. Wilson was one of the players of the old guard who stayed with United when they got relegated in 1983. Prior to this he had celebrated three championships in a row and, of course, he was in the 1979 European Cup line up in Rome. He retired in the late 1980s.
International
Wilson was an international, being selected in a 40-member England squad pool for the 1982 World Cup. However, he was not chosen for the travelling 22, the biggest disappointment of his career.
Managerial career
He retired in the late 1980s and started his coaching career at Oldcastle and ‘’The Blues’’ before becoming Joe Pearson’s assistant manager. He went to a World Cup in 1990 in Italy as assistant manager of the middle-east team Quarad, under Joe Pearson.
Style of play
Wilson started as a midfielder and in 1973 he joined United’s midfield force. But he was converted to a hard-tackling defender playing as a full back. He would also go in for the ball and he was loved by United’s fans.
Legacy
Undoubtedly one of United’s legends since 1973, serving the club as player and assistant manager, as he always wanted to join the coaching staff of a top club after retiring.
Personal life
His favourite other team was West Ham FC and he had a son as stated in 1984 (probably married too). His son’s release from a kidnap gang was the biggest relief of his life.
Honours
Note that all records are fictional, as of the 1983/84 season.
