Twenty Twenty (group)
Twenty Twenty (stylized as Twenty★Twenty) is a temporary Japanese idol group unit from Johnny & Associates that consists of 75 members from 15 Johnny's groups that have made their official debut, including V6, Arashi, SixTones, and Snow Man. The unit was formed as a way to contribute in helping curb the spread of Coronavirus. This is the third temporary group from the agency (after J-Friends[1] and Marching J) formed as part of a charity project.[2][3] Their original song titled "Smile" was written by Mr. Children's Kazutoshi Sakurai and produced by Hideaki Takizawa.[4]
History[edit]
Background[edit]
In 2013, president Johnny Kitagawa announced his idea of forming a new unit for the Tokyo Olympics consisting of 2 groups of 20 members each, a total of 40 members, chosen from among Johnny's Jr.'s 700 members, during an event at the Imperial Theater in Marunouchi, Tokyo, called "Johnny's World Thanksgiving". The group, tentatively called "2020" (referred to as "Toni Toni"), would be prepared from then on, until their CD debut at the beginning of the Olympic Games.[5][6][7]
By 2018, most of the members to be in Toni Toni had been picked and now were candidates to stay in the group. They had even performed in "ジャニーズ伝説2018 (Johnny's Legend 2018)" as part of the activities. That all ceased in 2019, following Kitagawa's death in July.[7]
Twenty Twenty in 2020[edit]
Since the Olympic Games got postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of the Olympic unit was scrapped. A new version of Twenty Twenty would be born. This time, it wouldn't be formed by Johnny's Jr. members as originally planned, but by members from groups that had already debuted.[8] The chosen name would take a new meaning after the passing of Kitagawa the year before, as this new unit would adopt the name left by him. However, some fans were not happy that it was not used by Johnny's Jr. members as originally announced. They thought that the idea of the groups participating in charity events was a good one, but that each should do it under their own name.[7]
Johnny's charity project Smile Up! Project, had already started with several activities carried out by members of the various groups that would form the unit, to help out during the crisis, such as procuring medical masks and protective clothing that medical institutions lack, and delivering them to those medical institutions that need them.[9] The song Takizawa asked Sakurai to create for the group[10] would be a part of them.[11]
Considered the USA for Africa equivalent within Johnny's, even being tagged with the name of the song of the supergroup, Twenty Twenty is the largest group in a charity campaign in Johnny's history, with 75 members from 15 groups.[12] News' Yuya Tegoshi was to be a part of the group, but was banned due to an outing that he had during the emergency declaration in late April.[13]
The single "Smile" was released in digital form on June 22, and will be on CD on August 12.[14][15] Proceeds from the sale of the single will be used to support medical personnel at the frontline.[12]
