On January 11, 2017, a viral news story was broadcast on Good Morning America where two 10-year-old Chinese-American adopted twins reunited after 10 years.
Process
In mid-2007, two families wanted to adopt a child. The Doering family, after having their third child, wanted to adopt a daughter, and the Rainsberries wanted the same thing, which led them to China. Jennifer and Thomas Doering adopted Audrey at 15 months in August 2007, and Nicole Rainsberry adopted Gracie in July 2007 at 14 months. By coincidence, they both had a heart defect; Gracie had two heart surgeries and Audrey had only one. Half a decade later, in December 2016, Jennifer Doering was interested in her adopted daughter's past and contacted a Chinese researcher on a website. He sent Jennifer the newspaper where Audrey was found as an abandoned child and a picture of two twins sitting on their foster mother's lap; one of them was Audrey. This led her to email Nancy Segal about her adoption. Jennifer sent her the newspaper and the photo of her adoptive mother, and further research in the newspaper and unknown documents revealed that her birth name was Tong Min Mei. Jennifer went on Facebook for 48 hours, where they found the Rainsberry family. Gracie and Audrey had DNA tests that showed they had 100% the same genes. They reunited in tears on GMA on January 11, 2017.[1][2][3]
Aftermath
Audrey went on trips to London and San Diego with her biological twin and appeared on the T.V. show "Long Lost Family" where Professor Tim Spector conducted tests on their personality behaviors and compared their bone density, lung capacity, and eye vision. The episode is considered lost because it has no online presence.[4]
Audrey Min Doering
Audrey Min Doering (born April 28, 2006) was born in an unknown Chinese hospital with a heart defect. She was abandoned as a child, and her name was later posted in a newspaper where abandoned children could be found. She was found on May 3, 2006, by an orphanage and was raised by a foster mother. The Doering family adopted her in 2007 and continue to take care of her.[5]
