TwitCasting is a livestreaming service operated by Moi Co., Ltd., headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. In early 2013, TwitCasting was developed as a way to use the Twitter feed to stream content from smartphones directly onto a user's channel.[1] In December 2018, it had over 20 million registered users.[2] As of March 2020, it had the most monthly active users among livestreaming apps in Japan, according to App Ape Lab. analytics.[3]
Overview[edit]
Livestreaming is possible from iPhone and Android devices as well as PC. Facebook and Twitter can be used to notify followers about the livestream.[4] The streaming method can be selected from a video livestream and a radio livestream (only audio is distributed but a still image is displayed on the screen). Registration and login are required for streaming and commenting. However, logging in is not required to watch a livestream.
Registration is possible via syncing a Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram account. In the Japanese version, it was possible to register with a mixi account, but this possibility has been since removed. Currently, it is also possible to log in from an independent TwitCasting account.[5]

On February 3, 2010 - TwitCasting Live for iPhone is launched and was linked with Twitter.[6] On April 6 2011, TwitCasting Live for Android was launched.[7]In February 2012, after a company split, the operating company was changed from Sidefeed Co., Ltd. to Moi Co., Ltd..[8] In May 2013, Moi Co., Ltd. raised ¥64.8 million from East Ventures and Masao Itō (User Local CEO),[9] and in June 2014, $5 million from Sinar Mas Group and East Ventures.[10]
In September 2015, the number of livestreams exceeded 200 million.[11] On February 18, 2018, "TwitCasting Kiitos", a function that allows listeners to support the planning of live broadcasters, was released,[12] In April 2018, TwitCasting began accepting virtual currency.[13]
In April 2019, a comprehensive license agreement regarding the use of copyrighted works of Nintendo Co., Ltd. was concluded.[14] A gameplay commentary app TwitCasting Games was released on August 8, 2019.[15] A screen sharing function for PC was released in July 2020.[16]
In March 2021, TwitCasting began broadcasting anime with titles from the Show by Rock!! series. Show by Rock!! Stars!! attracted over 200,000 viewers.[17][18] In October of the same year, the first movie began broadcasting on the service, Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu ehon to himitsu no ko.[19]
Offensive content and moderation[edit]
In May 2018, TwitCasting livestreamer Shinyaccho was arrested on the suspicion of punching a woman in the face while livestreaming at a Shinjuku restaurant. Shinyaccho had been arrested at least four times prior to that for unlicensed driving, disturbing public peace by dancing at a police station, and obstruction of business by peeing in a karaoke store. In all cases, he had been livestreaming during the crimes and the arrests, and an undeniably high possibility that Shinyaccho conducted these crimes for the purpose of attracting viewer attention was noted. Additionally, in June of the same year, popular videogame livestreamer Kuroda was arrested on the suspicion of obscene acts involving a minor.[20] Following these incidents, including others, livestreaming services including TwitCasting and Niconico came under fire on the Internet and many noted that the livestreaming service providers are responsible for these incidents. TwitCasting, among other livestreaming services, were faced with a difficult task of "suspending accounts that repeat malicious acts while ensuring the freedom that anyone can livestream content."[20]
On November 10, 2020, viewers of popular livestreamer Korekore repeatedly posted inappropriate comments on the livestream of Junnosuke Taguchi (former member of KAT-TUN). Following this case, TwitCasting declared that Korekore was responsible for the incident, and permanently banned Korekore.[21]
In September 2021, Shinyaccho received widespread criticism after livestreaming himself near Aoyama Gakuin University removing his mask and declaring "I have corona, I am spreading it" and proceeded to eat at multiple restaurants despite being infected with COVID-19. Following this incident, TwitCasting banned Shinyaccho indefinitely.[22]
