Tyler Mast is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and keyboardist based in Burlington, Vermont.
Biography
Tyler Mast was born in Evanston, Illinois on September 11, 1987. He attended Lake Forest High School from 2001-2005, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Vermont in 2009, and a Master's degree in Music Education from the University of Florida in 2022. In 2009, Mast began his professional music career by playing piano and Hammond organ at local rock and jazz clubs in Burlington, Vermont, and is considered a prominent musical representative of that city.[1] From 2009-2012 Mast toured the United States with the band Bearquarium. Bearquarium released a self-titled album in 2009, for which Mast acted as keyboardist, co-composer and executive producer.[2] The band recorded a second album in 2011 called "Capital House", which was never officially distributed due to the breakup of the band.
Mast, along with several members of Bearquarium, went on to form an R&B group with singer/DJ Craig Mitchell called Craig Mitchell & Motor City. The band released an EP in 2012 called "Hard Tellin' Not Knowin'", for which Mast acted as keyboardist, co-writer, and co-producer.[3]
In 2015 Mast created an instrumental jazz-fusion group called Tyler Mast & Paradise Divide. The band released a five-track EP called "Stereo Esteria" in 2016[4]. From 2015-2019 Mast was a member of the Americana-Rock band Josh Panda and the Hot Damned, who regularly collaborated with other Vermont musicians to produce tribute shows to artists such as Queen, Elton John, The Doors, and Prince. In addition to performing live, Mast's keyboard playing is featured on Seasons 1 and 2 of the New England Emmy-award winning TV series "Mister Chris and Friends".[5]
In 2020, Mast started the folk/jam-rock band Tyler Mast Band. In addition to being the bandleader and songwriter, Mast is also the lead singer, keyboardist, and organist.[6] Their 2022 LP "In the Company of a Friend" received a nomination for Album of the Year by IndieShark Magazine.[7]
Mast has shared the stage with members of Phish, Trey Anastasio Band, Derek Trucks Band, Jerry Garcia Band, Furthur, moe., Grace Potter, Mike Gordon[8]
