Tyrone Paterson (born 1962) is a Canadian conductor. Paterson is currently music advisor and principal conductor for Manitoba Opera, a position he has held since 2004.Paterson is also an arts administrator and not-for-profit manager.

Career[edit]

Paterson began his career in Calgary, Alberta and made his professional orchestral conducting debut leading the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.[1] [2]

Paterson's opera career began with Calgary Opera when he became resident conductor in 1986[3]. He made his mainstage opera conducting debut with Calgary Opera's Amahl and the Night Visitors in 1988.[4][5] In 1998, Paterson gained the position of General Director of OLO (1998–2014).[6] His first production as general director was the Ottawa premiere of a production of Les Pecheurs de Perles after which he went on to lead over 90 performances at the National Arts Centre.[7] His conducting is known for its clarity and sensitivity, and a collaborative approach to music-making.[8]

Under Paterson's leadearship OLO improved both artistically and financially.[9][10][11] In addition, Paterson also established a Young Artist Program with OLO, which included such notable performers as Joyce El-Khoury.[12] and Jonathan Estabrooks.

He also led rehearsals and performances for both the Symphony Orchestra and the Opera at the University of Western Ontario from 2017 to 2019.
