US3R is a solo electronic musician in Seattle, WA. His stage name is a Numeronym of the word "user" and is in reference to computer hacking culture.[1]

Biography[edit]

US3R grew up in Palm Springs, California to a family of musicians. His mother and uncle were touring members of the The Righteous Brothers in the 1980s and 90s[2]. US3R was formed in part as part of the quickly growing Synthwave scene in 2018. At midnight on January 1, 2019, his debut album 1985 was released. After spending all of his earlier years living around Southern California, he relocated to Seattle in 2017 and began creating music under the name US3R.

Music[edit]

Early works[edit]

His early works Jupiter[3] and Searching[4] were fully instrumental and followed traditional Synthwave and Dark wave electronic styles that incorporated retro synthesizers and 1980s era drum machines.

1985[edit]

With the debut of his first album 1985, the traditional sounds from earlier works had already begun to evolve and incorporate elements of modern EDM and Electronic pop music. Along with heavy use of 1980s synthesizers and drum machines, 11 of 13 songs on the album featured his own vocals. With its inclusion of other genres such as trap, emo, vocoder-driven pop, the album diverged from typical synthwave and became reminiscent of popular acts such as Daft Punk and Weezer. While much of the album is lyrically upbeat, one track, Chemistry, featured heavy social commentary, which would later become his signature lyrical style.

After releasing the album on New Year's Eve of 2018/2019, he unreleased the album and re-released it in early May 2019, citing mastering changes to the album.

INFLUENCE[edit]

In December of 2019, with the release of the album INFLUENCE[5], US3R's style further evolved away from traditional synth music. In a November 2019 interview, US3R described the album as electronic grunge with vocals that were heavy influenced by modern pop music.[6]

Unlike his past works, the album focused lyrically on making social commentary [7]. The album touched on the topics of influencer culture, social media, addiction to technology, and the loss of intimacy in the age of the internet.[8][9] The album's singles "Millennial Blues"[10][11] and "I wanna be famous"[12][13][14] closely followed the theme of the album.

A single from the album, Millennial Blues, specially touched on generations' tendency to label each other, even though those labels may be nothing more than stereotypes. According to an interview in a behind-the-scenes video for the album, the song attempted to capture gritty honesty around his experience of graduating from college during the Financial crisis of 2007–08 and struggling to build a career, while simultaneously being labeled as lazy and entitled by older generations.[15]

2020 Tour[edit]

In a radio interview Nightride.fm, US3R announced a 2020 USA Tour including live performances in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Hollywood, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, and NYC.[16]
