The USS LSM-54 was a LSM-1-class landing ship medium of the United States Navy, commissioned at Brown Shipyards in Houston, Texas, on 17 August 1944. During the remainder of World War II, it served in the Pacific. This ship is known for being the only LSM to successfully shoot down a Japanese aircraft. The aircraft was a reconnaissance plane that most likely strayed too close to the ship. The ship also ended up stuck on a beach and, under enemy fire, had to be towed off by a battleship. The commanding officer was Lieutenant Donald C. Newborg, USNR.
