The US Grant Conference was a high school conference in northwest Illinois, eastern Iowa, and southwest Wisconsin. The conference participated in athletics and activities in the Illinois High School Association. The conference included small public high schools located in Jo Daviess County, in Illinois, Dubuque County in Iowa and Lafayette County in Wisconsin. The conference was named for President Ulysses S. Grant, who lived in Galena, Illinois from 1860 until 1865.

History

The first year of competition was approximately 1940 with five charter schools: East Dubuque, Galena, Stockton and Warren in Illinois plus St. Columbkille of Dubuque, Iowa. Between 1940 and 1953, additional Illinois high schools in Elizabeth, Hanover and Scales Mound joined the conference. In 1953, Shullsburg High School of Shullsburg, Wisconsin joined the league creating a unique scenario where schools from three states competed in the same conference. Finally, in 1955 Freeport Aquin departed from the SHARK and joined the conference taking the total number of teams to 10. The last year of competition for the league was 1958.

Based on the fact that the conference contained schools from three states, and an emphasis on refraining from interstate conferences, several of the Illinois schools made a transition to the Stephenson County Conference in 1959. The schools moving east were: Aquin, Galena, Stockton and Warren. The Stephenson County Conference previously contained four high schools: Dakota, Durand, Orangeville and the newly formed, Lena-Winslow High School. This merger created a league containing eight teams that were all within the state of Illinois and all within easy driving distance.
