U Up? is a dating-themed podcast launched in 2017 presented by Betches co-founder Jordana Abraham and comedian Jared Freid, where they discuss their take on the ebbs and flows of dating and relationships in the digital age. According to Abraham and Freid, U Up? was created to placate listeners doubts and fears about dating.

History[edit]

The idea for U Up? came from Jordana Abraham, who co-founded Betches a social media branch for young women. She wanted to make a podcast that "would allow listeners to get male and female perspectives on their love lives at the same time".[1] She and stand-up comedian Jared Freid launched on the podcast on November 15, 2017.

The weekly podcasts are about 90 minutes long.[1] Regular segments include: responding to listener emails; Awkward Sexual Encounters, (description of segment); and Red Flag or Deal Breaker, where they discuss whether certain traits or actions from a person mean they should be a red flag (still would continue dating) or a deal breaker (end the relationship).[2] Celebrities such as Tyler Cameron of The Bachelorette, radio/television host Andy Cohen, and comedian Whitney Cummings have guested on the show.[3] They re-enact text message conversations.[4]

Live show and tour[edit]

Freid and Abraham expanded the podcast to include U Up? Live shows where they answer audience questions, do dating app makeovers, they do the Red Flag / Deal Breaker segment where the audience votes with paddles.[1][4][5]

In August 2019, Abraham and Freid officially kicked off a 21-show tour of live shows throughout North America[6], running through the end of the year. Susan Moskop of The Chicago Tribune described the show as a way for attendees to gain "no-nonsense advice for dating in the city".[7] U Up? is also listed among the headlining acts for the New York Comedy Festival in November 2019.[8]

Reception[edit]

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the podcast was streamed over 688,000 times as of January 2019.[1]

Annie Foskett of Elite Daily listed the podcast among her "Top 5 Podcasts About Dating You Need To Hear If You're Dating In Your 20s", writing that "I love that they tackle dating issues from both a female and male perspective, and I also love that they are generally not about anyone wasting anyone else's time."[9] Kellie Dietrich of The Reading Eagle wrote "Even if I don't completely agree with Abraham's or Freid's advice, their honesty is refreshing" and a great balance of humor while tackling modern dating for millennials in a serious way." [2] Carly Mallenbaum and Hannah Yasharoff of USA Today listed U Up? among their 13 best podcasts to listen to over a summer road trip.[10]
