This is a festival celebrated by the Esan people. It takes place annually between December and January in Ewossa, Ewohimi, Ewatto, Ebelle and Ogwa. It is celebrated to appease the gods and to bring prosperity. Ukpe (year) is a celebration held in June by all of the communities that make up Ewohiwi to mark the end of one year and the start of another. Homage is offered to ancestors as a way of thanking them for protecting the people all year. The celebration lasts four days and is hosted by each hamlet in turn, starting with Idumuagbor and ending with Ikeken. Entertainment, service at ancestral shrines, gift exchange, and traditional dancing are all part of the festivities. The event concludes on a market day, when everyone dresses up and dances to the Ewohimi market. [1]
