The Ullens School is a private non-profit primary-secondary school located in the city of Lalitpur, Nepal. Established in 2006, the school runs Nepal’s first International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and continues to have a long term partnership with the Bank Street College of Education, New York. Additionally, the school offers classes from kindergarten to grade 12 on the basis of Nepal's National Curriculum.[1]

The school was funded through the philanthropy of Baron Guy Ullens and his wife Myriam Ullens, who continue to visit the school periodically and engage with the students and faculty. It is considered as one of the most prestigious and expensive private schools in Nepal and students from the IB Diploma program continue to gain admissions into selective universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, etc.[2]

Administration and academics[edit]

Ullens School delivers its curriculum and philosophy based on Bank Street’s Developmental Interactive Approach and the staff periodically receive pedagogical training from the Bank Street School of Education. Many of the faculty are teachers from around the world adding to the diversity in education of the school.

In addition, the school's curriculum is designed to meet the needs of each student through the application of Nepal’s National Curriculum. The primary curriculum includes the core areas of learning and experience: Language and Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Creative and Expressive Arts, Information and Communications Technology and Vocational Education. Classes are taught in English, but students learn to speak and write in both Nepali and English. In addition, all students from grade I to VIII study Mandarin

Students are encouraged to go on educational field trips sponsored by the school to extend their knowledge and experience. This provides a direct first-hand experience in learning as well as providing a stimulus for work in the classroom. Ullens School places an emphasis on increasing student’s performance skills and houses an art, music and drama rooms to develop a student’s creativity and confidence.

At the end of each school year a Curriculum Committee reviews and modifies each grade level curriculum in relation to "Best Teaching Practices" used throughout the year and student academic performance. Parents are invited during Curriculum Night for review of their child's performance and to hold a discourse regarding any suggestions and complaints.

IB Programme[edit]

Ullens School is the first and only IB World School in Nepal that has been authorized to implement the IB Diploma Programme by the Switzerland-based International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). Only schools authorized by the IBO as IB World Schools can offer any of its three academic programmes. The IB Diploma Programme at Ullens School for the academic session 2009 began on 17 August 2009. The IBDP is a rigorous two-year pre-university international education programme that meets the needs of highly motivated secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19.[3]
