Umar Kamaal Farooqui (born 26 June 1992) is an Indian politician and barrister from Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He is associated with the Indian National Congress and previously served as the State Spokesperson of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra.[1]

Early life and education

Farooqui was born in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, to Kamaal Farooqui and Nasreen Begum. His family has longstanding political and social ties in the Marathwada region.

He completed his schooling at Holy Cross English High School in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad). Farooqui holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Maulana Azad College, along with a Diploma in TV Journalism from MGM College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

He pursued a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at the University of Central Lancashire and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Legal Practice from the University of Law, Manchester Campus. Farooqui was called to the Bar of England and Wales by Lincoln’s Inn, London.

Political career

Farooqui began his political involvement in 2010 through the student wing of the Nationalist Congress Party, where he served as Vice President of the Maharashtra State unit.

In 2018, he was appointed as the State Spokesperson for the NCP in Maharashtra, making him one of the youngest political spokespersons in the country. Farooqui represented the party in various media debates and discussions on regional and national issues.

In 2024, prior to the Maharashtra state elections, Farooqui joined the Indian National Congress along with his father, senior politician Kamaal Farooqui.[1][2][3]

Farooqui is noted for his efforts to promote educational and socio-political awareness in the Marathwada region and has been active in public welfare initiatives since 2010.[4]

Personal life

Farooqui married Zakiyya Nakhuda in 2013. The couple has two children and resides in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
