Umbelopsidales is an order of fungi in the class Umbelopsidomycetes, within the phylum Mucoromycota. The order contains the family Umbelopsidaceae and the genus Umbelopsis, a group of early-diverging mucoromycotan fungi that includes soil-inhabiting and saprotrophic species.[1][2]
Taxonomy
The order is placed in the class Umbelopsidomycetes, which was introduced in a revised high-level classification of the fungi.[1] Some taxonomic sources place Umbelopsidales within Umbelopsidomycetes and treat Umbelopsidaceae as its family.[3][4]
The family Umbelopsidaceae was earlier separated from Mucorales on the basis of morphological and molecular evidence from the genus Umbelopsis.[5]
Description
Members of Umbelopsidales are filamentous fungi with branched thalli. The hyphae are initially aseptate, although septa may form near branches. Asexual reproduction occurs by sporangia, which may be globose or elongated. Sporangiophores are often branched, and chlamydospores may be produced in culture.[1]
Ecology
Species of Umbelopsis, the best-known genus associated with the order, are commonly reported from soil, forest litter, dung and other organic substrates. Some species have also been found in association with plants or other fungi.[2] The genus includes oleaginous fungi, meaning that some species can accumulate lipids and have been studied for biochemical and biotechnological interest.[6]
