Umbelopsidomycetes is a class of fungi in the phylum Mucoromycota. It was introduced for a deeply branching lineage of early-diverging fungi associated with the order Umbelopsidales.[1] The class includes fungi with branched thalli, initially aseptate hyphae, and asexual reproduction by sporangia.[1]
Taxonomy
The class Umbelopsidomycetes was described by Tedersoo and colleagues in 2018 as part of a revised high-level classification of the fungi.[1] In that classification, the former order-level lineage Umbelopsidales was treated at class rank because of its deep phylogenetic divergence within Mucoromycota.[1]
The type genus of the class is Umbelopsis.[1] The Global Biodiversity Information Facility also treats Umbelopsidomycetes as a class within Mucoromycota.[2]
Description
Members of Umbelopsidomycetes are characterised by branched thalli and hyphae that are initially without septa but may develop septa near branches. They generally show relatively slow growth in culture. Asexual reproduction occurs by sporangia, which may be globose or elongated and reddish to ochraceous in colour. Sporangiophores are densely branched, and chlamydospores are commonly produced in culture. Sexual reproduction has not been observed in the group.[1]
Ecology
Species placed in Umbelopsidomycetes are mainly known as saprotrophic fungi. Members of the associated genus Umbelopsis have been reported from soil and plant-associated substrates, and some species occur in association with other fungi.[3]
