History
There were two brothers at Aro, blacksmiths (Ọkpụzụ in Igbo) by profession. One was named Nwangwu and the other was Eze Uku. As they were ill-treated by their relatives, they decided to desert their home town, Aro. Tracing the path that Ntalakwu followed, they arrived at Ntalakwu unexpectedly, for the fact that they did not know anyone there. As there was no trust in those days, the Ntalakwu people took them captive and suspected them to be spies.
After some time, when the Ntalakwu people discovered that they did not mean any harm, these two brothers were given pieces of land by Ntalakwu for settlement in Oboro. Once they were assured of their final settlement in Oboro, they went home and collected all their belongings, including their families, and returned to settle there.
Formerly, the compound of Nwangwu was known as Amangwu and that of Eze Uku was known as Ndi Chuku. Fortunately for them, they grew in population and had twelve compounds in all. Then they decided to be known as Umuigwu, which means "the children of lyes". They jointly worshiped a god called Ahia Njoku with the other Ikwueke families. As a privilege, they were given the powerful drum (Ikoro) to care for. They said the Ikoro sounded as thus, "Ọborụ Arụ buru Igbo". The following make up the twelve compounds/hamlets of Umuigwu;
- Mbachie
- Mbara
- Akoli
- Umuorie
- Amangwu
- Ndi Chuku
- Ama Oji
- Elu-Elu
- Ndi Ekeke
- Agbommiri
- Umunnata
- Umuchieze
Umuigu was the first village to receive the gospel in Oboroland in the year 1910. The Methodist Mission was built there in the year 1913. Mazi Uchebe Aguku was their war minister. Late Mazi Okutue Okoroafor was their Warrant Chief. The eldest man of Umuigwu then was Mazi Kanu Ogbonnaya.[6]
