Plot and themes

unOrdinary is a superhero high school drama set in Wellston Private High School, the upper echelon for students with a high power ranking.[1] The school is the main focal point for the hierarchical nature of their society as a whole. For the most part it mirrors the modern world with the addition of superpowers.[2] The comic deals with themes of trauma, oppression, bullying, individuality, and rebellion.[2]

At the start of the story, the protagonist John is depicted as a powerless student at a high school filled with the most powerful and violent kids in the country. He spends much of his time avoiding fights and dodging conflict due to his lack of an ability to fight back, and has the power of his friend Seraphina to back him up when he encounters something he is unable to deal with.[8] Seraphina and John break the mold; a high ranker and a powerless student associating with each other is nearly unheard of in their society. Their friendship leads to the beginnings of cracks in the hierarchical structure of their school, and to better illustrate the flawed nature of their society John introduces Seraphina to the banned book, "unOrdinary".[2]

Major characters

The following characters are central to plot lines in the comic and make regular appearances:

  • John is the protagonist and is the only student at Wellston with no abilities, but it soon comes to light that he had powers he wanted to keep hidden. He’s a damaged and bitter character who makes poor choices despite his desire to change for the better. This internal struggle explodes outwardly into a violent and tyrannical personality. He hates the way the world is and wants desperately not to be a part of it, yet he always finds himself forced back in and inevitably abusing his power.[2]
  • Seraphina is the most powerful student at Wellston and John's best friend despite their apparent power difference. Her time manipulation abilities make her capable of taking down anyone at Wellston. Despite this, she broke from the hierarchy because of John's influence and opted to live the life she wanted to live instead of adhering to Wellston's power rankings. Now she’s found that shirking those responsibilities might have led to the current turmoil at the school, and is looking to take a leadership position once more.[1]
  • Arlo was the King of Wellston when John arrived and fully believed in enforcing the school's hierarchy. Arlo feels responsible for everyone's well-being and is beginning to realize how abusive the previous system was to the lower ranks.[9]
  • Remi is the current Queen of Wellston and has the power of supercharged lightning. She is portrayed as one of the most caring and responsible students at Wellston. Her drive and enthusiasm for balancing the scales is infectious and her ideas are beginning to spread through the other high ranking students in the school.
  • Blyke is the current Jack of Wellston and the best friend of Isen and Remi. Stubborn, determined, and empathetic, Blyke has all the makings of a real superhero.
  • Isen is the star reporter of Wellston and the best friend of Remi and Blyke.
  • Cecile is the press lead and former Queen of Wellston.
  • Elaine is the healing high tier and the roommate of Seraphina.

Awards

The comic has been nominated multiple times in the Ringo Awards for the Fan-Favorite Villain award. It won the award in 2017, 2018, and 2020, for Arlo, Arlo, and John respectively.[4][5][6]
