Development[edit]

Due to Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective's poor performance critically and commercially it was initially thought to be the final film in the Ace Ventura franchise.[1] In October 2017, Morgan Creek Entertainment announced plans to reboot several films from its library, including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Its president David C. Robinson said Morgan Creek's plan was not to simply remake the film, but to do a follow-up in which Ace Ventura passes the mantle to a new character, such as a long-lost son or daughter.[2] In 2018, according to Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls co-star Tommy Davidson stated that, Jim Carrey displayed a lack of interest in participating in a possible third film.[3]

In December 2019, it was reported that a third Ace Ventura film was in early development.[4] In February 2021, it was rumored that a new sequel was being developed with Evan Peters being cast as the "son of Ace Ventura".[5] By March 2021, the film was officially announced to be in development with Pat Casey and Josh Miller signed on as co-screenwriters. The pair serving as writers for Sonic the Hedgehog, in which Carrey also starred in.[6] The project became a joint-venture production within Warner Bros. Pictures, Morgan Creek Entertainment, Amazon Studios, and Prime Video Original Films, with plans to be released simultaneously theatrically and via streaming as a Amazon Prime Video exclusive.[7] In August 2021, Carrey confirmed that he had officially signed on to reprise his role as Ace Ventura, and that he was "more than ready for the next chapter".[8]
