Production
In May 2017, HBO announced that Jane Goldman was one of the four writers working on potential pilots for a Game of Thrones spin-off, including Carly Wray, Max Borenstein, and Brian Helgeland.[1] Goldman had been working and communicating with George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the series of novels upon which the original series was based.[2] Current Game of Thrones showrunners D. B. Weiss and David Benioff would also be executive producers for whichever project was picked up by HBO.[2][3] In June 2018, it was reported that Goldman's pilot had been greenlit by HBO and that she would be the creator and executive producer on the pilot, which would focus on "the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour," thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones.[4] Martin explained that no actors or characters from the original series would be returning in the prequel, as it would be set about ten thousand years before the original series' events, and he also suggested the title to be "The Long Night".[5] Production on the big-budgeted prequel pilot would begin in 2019 and the search for a director was underway.[6] In September 2019, Martin claimed the pilot was in post-production[7] but in October 2019, it was announced that HBO had decided not to move forward with Goldman's prequel series.[8]
Casting
In October 2018, it was announced that Naomi Watts had been cast as the female lead in the pilot, playing a character described as "a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret."[9] Later the same month, Josh Whitehouse was also cast for an unspecified role.[10]
In December 2018, it was reported that Denise Gough, Sheila Atim, and Georgie Henley had been cast in the series. In addition, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett was in consideration for a role.[11]
In January 2019, Naomi Ackie, Jamie Campbell Bower, Ivanno Jeremiah, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo were added to the cast of the pilot.[12]
In March 2019, Miranda Richardson, Marquis Rodriguez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx joined the cast of the pilot in lead roles.[13][14]
