Development[edit]

On June 20, 2018, Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes hired Andrew Dodge to write a reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series.[1] On the 24th Critics' Choice Awards, Fuller and Form confirmed the film to be in development, with the production set to start by the end of 2019, though there's no current director for the project.[2] On July 25, 2019, Lindsey Beer was reported to be writing the film alongside Dodge.[3] The same day, TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman said that the film is still in early development stages. Eastman also felt that Paramount took the reactions to the last two films "to heart", and that the reboot will be "a next-level type of stuff".[3] However, plans for a live-action reboot were eventually scrapped.

In June 30, 2020, it was reported that Nickelodeon Animation Studios was developing an animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Paramount, marking the studio's first fully computer-animated film.[4] Connected co-director Jeff Rowe is set to direct the film, with Brendan O'Brian set to write the screenplay.[4] Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver will produce the film througth their company, Point Grey Pictures.[4] Brian Robbins said that "[a]dding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property".[4] Rowe said that it is an "absolut pleasure" to direct the film, having been a fan of the franchise since childhood.[5] In August 4, 2020, Rogen said that the film will both feature elements from the franchse, of which he's been a lifelong fan, and "kind of [hone] in on" to elements from his previous teenager-centered movies.[6]
