UpBuild is a marketing consulting startup specializing in website analytics, search engine optimization and conversion rate optimization. The company employs an entirely distributed workforce with remote employees spread across the United States. Notable clients served include Zoomdata, Sonos, Newton Software, Phoseon Technology, Wacom, Pendleton Woolen Mills, Gerber Legendary Blades, Act-On, and Oregon Health & Science University.
History[edit]
UpBuild was founded on May 1st, 2015[3] by Mike Arnesen as an Oregon LLC. The formation of UpBuild followed the acquisition of SwellPath by 6D Global Technologies in March 2015[4], when Arnesen left the former company. UpBuild operated as a single-person consultancy for less than two months before Arnesen, working out of a home office in Beaverton, Oregon, began hiring additional consultants and building a remote team.[5]
Prior to making initial personnel hires, Arnesen penned a set of company values; UpBuild is part of a growing cohort of "culture-first companies", where organizational culture and values are given priority and ofter created prior to significant business growth.[6] By the end of 2015, the company had a team of four people. As of mid-2018, the company employs a team of ten.[7]
As the company grew, Ruth Burr Reedy (formerly the Lead SEO at Moz) was brought on as UpBuild's Director of Strategy.[8]
By April 2017, the company had exceeded $1MM in total revenue. UpBuild has been and continues to be a bootstrapped and self-funded startup without the support of private equity funding.
Recognition[edit]
In 2016, UpBuild was selected as a Moz Recommended Company.[9] In 2017, UpBuild was named TINYpulse's "Happiest Company" in the marketing and advertising sector. [10][11]
Industry Involvement[edit]
Both Arnesen and Burr Reedy are frequent speakers at digital marketing conferences such as Search Marketing Expo, MozCon, SearchLove, Confluence, State of Search, and more. Furthermore, Arnesen has also been an Adjunct Professor of Analytics at Portland State University since 2016.[12] Burr Reedy has been featured on The Oklahoman. [13]
The company has also been credited in notable publications including Smashing Magazine.[14]
UpBuild is a member of SEMpdx — a non-profit professional association in Portland, Oregon — and is a part of the We Hire Refugees initiative — a business-led initiative launched in partnership with the nonprofit Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization.[15]
