Upendra Narayan
Upendra Narayan Upendra Narayan is an Indian road safety activist, known for inventing the ceramic reflector and International rally driver who started voluntary road safety work during 1996 by imparting training to various types of drivers and motorbike riders on safe driving and riding. He won first prize in Oman International rally which accredited him with the ruler’s platinum award from the then royal family. He was a regular driver for a popular rally team and was replaced by N. Leelakrishnan, a well known rally driver, due to health problems.
He has developed the world's first ceramic reflector and fixed them on culvert and bridge walls, guide stones and concrete posts on the roads of (3 states) Kerala, Karnataka, and part of Tamil Nadu free of charge.[1] He has also erected more than 3,000 reflective traffic signs as per IRC specifications on unmarked humps, school zones and danger zones. According to him, road accidents formed the fourth prominent cause of death of people in the State after cardiac problems, respiratory diseases and cancer.[2]
Upendra Narayan has introduced "Each One Teach One" project with the permission of Government officials for training students on pedestrian discipline, biking discipline and bus travel disciplines. This initiative reduced 30% of road deaths in Ernakulam rural district during 2009 in Kerala. He was a trainer to Kerala and Tamil Nadu Highway police on advanced and people friendly enforcement. He is also a member of the Kerala State Road Safety Council.[3] His commitment helped the Kerala government to reduce many traffic-related issues in different parts of the state.[4] He was also an active participant in many news debates and forum discussions related to road safety and contributed many ideas on improving safety of passengers.[5]
