Uploadcare is a cloud-based PaaS providing end-to-end file management. It enables users to upload, store, process, and download videos, images, and other files before delivering them to the end user.[1][2] The platform is designed for websites and web apps, and it uses machine learning and image recognition. The company offers GDPR and HIPAA-compliant data storage[3] to protect the privacy of individuals’ information. Uploadcare’s headquarters are in Vancouver, Canada, with offices in Netherlands and Russia.
History
Uploadcare was originally developed by the web design agency called Whitescape[4] as a developer tool for file uploads. In 2011, while working on a project to process, upload, and store a large number of audio files, the co-owners of the agency, Igor Debatur[5] and Anatoly Chernyakov, formed the basic concept of Uploadcare. The idea was presented on Hacker News and received a positive response from the audience. The founders invested $35,000 and presented an alpha version by the end of 2011. A total of $450,000 was raised from VKontakte co-founder Lev Leviev to continue development.[6]
In 2018, the company reached a break-even point. In November 2019, Uploadcare raised $1.7 million[7] from Runa Capital[8] and Vendep Capital. The following month, the company acquired the Blinkloader startup[9][10] which offered its image optimization tools for content delivery networks (CDNs) and its development team.
