Usha International is a non-govt company in India which is mainly known as sewing machine and fan manufacturing company.

History[edit]

The Company was first introduced in 1889 which used to be called as Shriram Group at that time. In 1936 Shriram Group has introduced India's first sewing machine with the brand name of Usha. It exported their first sewing machine 5 years later on 1941. In the subsequent years Usha has launched other product lines. In 1946 it has started manufacturing Fans. In the later half of the century the company has enriched their product line with variety of home appliances and appeared as a brand of all types of consumer durables. In 1982 it has changed their name from Usha Sales to Usha International Limited which is the present brand name.

Usha Sewing Machine[edit]

The popularity of the Usha brand in India was more because of their sewing machines and sewing school chains as compared to other consumer durables. In the post world war II era Usha machine has played similar role which was played by Singer Machines in many other countries. A sewing machine acts as an earning member of a middle class or lower middle class family. As it is an obvious fact that the demand of clothes and food will never become null in any society, sewing acts as an alternate way of earning in many households. Usha has started their sewing school chain to promote their sewing machine business since 2011.[3]

Usha Sewing Schools[edit]

Usha join their hands time to time with different NGOs, Government bodies or media house like NDTV to spread their sewing school chain.[3] Previously they used to sell manual foot operated paddle iron sewing machine through their sewing schools. Now they have joined hand with Japanese Company Janome to manufacture automatic electric sewing machines named Usha Janome Sewing Machines.[4]
